Very promising development and progress. I will be interesting to watch and see if this actually gets acceptable or is another dead end program. I'm just not sure about its real usefulness. Trying to see a real advantage of this versus driving a real car to the airport and getting in a real plane. As long as you still have to go to an airport it seems too limited.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

The major problem is see is not with the technology but with legal liability and regulation. Would the FAA be taking care of the flight paths for these flying cars?

I don't know how flying cars will even work without being far away from any urban areas and all of the current flight lanes. A minor bingle or breakdown in the air means death above and below. Imagine rush hour ..jeebus.

Exactly. It makes the massive flying car traffic you see in "The Fifth Element" and "Revenge of the Sith" purely science fiction indeed.

Given the lengthy delay in getting UAS rules created, I think the FAA will get those flying cars properly regulated a mere 10 years after they become practical.

Vienna, 2nd rock left.
I really don't see the point.

As a car, it's carrying too much bulk, likely not top-class safety (impact energy absorbtion by deformation and so on), it has small tires, weak axles... needs tons of space and has almost no boot.
As a plane, it's carrying too much weight.

There is no benefit.

Me too.

It looks like it would fall apart driving on roads that are not very well maintained.

If it were me driving I would feel like a complete dork.

If you have enough money to buy one then I am sure you have enough to drive to the airfield and get into
your Cessna or whatever to get you to that all important business meeting.

Much better with a jet pack biggrin

I agree, either one or the other.
Not something that does both, badly......

For a flying car to be a true revelution and not just a fad we need a few things.

One is a power source that does not require a cumbersome and weighty internal combustion engine
The other is a propulsion mechanism that does not require blades.

When they have that, then I think we can have a flying car.

Devs said there was stuff there, but you just couldn't see it.

That and no huge wings. Honestly until we invent antigravity or something equally out there the idea is always going to be a solution in search of a problem.

If they would just modify the pilots seat to be a combination recliner and toilet, then they might just have a viable product. copter

With this added feature one could lay back, relax, drive a while, then fly a while--plus pinch a loaf at any point---what's not to like?

However, I'm still waiting on my personal jet pack and my Charlize Theron look alike companion/sex robot! biggrin

I mean really, what's the delay with commercially available jet packs? Sean Connery fricking used one in "Thunderball" in 1965!

The problem here is that this is not a flying car, this is an airplane-car thingy. When I think of a flying car I think in the Fight Element kind of car. It's not a car anymore, it's a flying machine, natural of the skies and with a ton of "electronic automation". ie, futuristic as hell.

1. Heat. You could easily give yourself 3rd degree burns touching it at the wrong place and wrong time, and when you arrive the problem of being able to put it down without starting a fire is real.

2. Endurance. Like 45 seconds or something. Why bother?

3. Safety. It's like a flying motorcycle with no brakes. And what if you run out of fuel at 500 ft? Too low for a chute, you're dead.

4. Control. Nothing to change direction but shifting your body weight. Hardly forgiving for the learning phase.

It's a true SF-fantasy.
