Thanks, Robert! I figured if they all decided to come after me, I was going to need every .303 round!

I did get awarded a shiny new N23 for my efforts. I had a skinning tutorial at one point, I'll have to dig it back out when I get a chance.

Just caught up with Charles' latest video, bit of nasty business, eh? That enemy pilot didn't want to give you up, he must have been flying a challenge of his own!

2nd Lt Edward Buxton
60 Sqn RFC

5th Mission

5th April 1917

B Flight:

Lt George Lawrence Lloyd c/s B3
2nd Lt William Fry c/s A5
2nd Lt Geoffrey Pidcock c/s B4
2nd Lt Edward Buxton c/s B11

All flight members flew Nieuport 23 aircraft except me.

Patrol Behind Enemy Front Lines – area of Boiry St. Martin – South West of Arras
Take Off: 06h42

Wind Speed 8 knots - Gentle breeze NW
Operational height 6,000 feet

Flight to the patrol area was uneventful.

Could see heavy ground bombardments along the Arras front line

07h12: We spotted friendly archie West of Arras

Claim:

Whilst carrying out our patrol, we spotted friendly archie West of Arras. The flight circled, and as we approached the area we spotted a flight of 6 DFW CV at approximately 7,000 feet (we were at 6,000 feet) heading South West. George Lloyd gave the signal to engage. We circled and got on to their tails but they were able to keep height advantage. The other members of the flight, who were flying more powerful aircraft than I, were able to close with the German two-seaters. I observed two of the DFW aircraft fall out of the sky. The other German aircraft now broke formation. I was able to get under one of the German aircraft and fired a number of short bursts of between 10 - 15 rounds each. As I circled to make another pass, and noticed that there was smoke coming from the DFW engine. I dived on to the German aircraft (who was now below me), firing a number of longer bursts of between 15 - 30 rounds. The German aircraft went Out of Control and crashed destroyed close to a small wooded area 2 miles North East of Abainzevelle. The flight formed up and we continued the patrol.

All B Flight members returned safely.

George Lloyd claimed one German aircraft destroyed; William Fry claimed two German machines destroyed.

Nicely done, Beanie, those two seaters scare me more than scouts! Stay careful, your N23 is coming, I got mine on the 7th, I think... haven't flown it yet.

Cheers Rick

Yes, I am looking forward to getting my hands on a Ni 23 - I am finding flying the Ni 17 frustrating - not enough power when you need it.

Thanks!

Yeah, that makes sense, thought it was maybe the aircraft number, like Beanie has on his side, but I thought they were longer numbers, call signs are probably it!

'Ballsy' reporting in with mission #5.

After a nice little rest flirting with the female nurses I reported back to base on the morning of the 10th with orders to attack a railyard. In my absence the squadron has finished converting over to the 23. Having checked this machine over to make sure there wasn't a big "hit me" sign painted on the back of the plane we took off at noon under scattered dark clouds.

With Lt Scott leading we headed out towards our objective. In the distance I can see our objective & I keep an eye on Scott waiting for the command to go in, and wait, and wait, and hey it's behind us. Meanwhile 'Zulu' Loyd has already peeled off and is attacking along with the guys from 'A' flight. At this point I decide I really don't want to fly all the way to Berlin (which seems to be where Scott is headed). I leave formation as well and head for the action.

We spend a good five minuets attacking before Scott fianlly wakes up and brings the rest of the flight back into the attack. In the meantime Archie has apparently caught Loyd and he has gone down. It doesn't look good.

After going through 3/4 of my ammo I pull off waiting for the rest of the flight to finish. Scott comes up and we start to form up and the idiot Scott seems to just want to circle and circle and circle the rail yard even though we're all in formation. Meanwhile Archie is doing his best to bring us all down. I am begining to wonder about Scott by this time. I finally break formation again and head towards home. On the way there's a balloon I can see just off to my side so I decide to empty my guns into it. So I fire until I here that dreaded click that signifies the end of a drum. Oh well guess I'm not gonna get the balloon I think but, as I fly past I see a wisp of smoke coming off the balloon and than I hear behind me a WHOSHH as the ballon goes up.

I make it back to camp along with the rest of the flight quite proud that I can finally put in a claim. However, when Scotts' plane stops he jumps out and runs over to me and reads my the book! How dare you leave formation, I should write you up, and so on. Finally he finishes by saying "oh and by the way I know about the balloon but if you know what's good for you you won't even think about filling a claim. Think of it as your punishment for leaving formation." Geeze the guy really has something stuck where the sun doesn't shine.....

Note 390 rounds fired 190 hit and nothing damaged. Best gunnery I've ever had....sigh

The only really good news is that Lloyd is OK. Some how he made it back to our side of the lines not to mention survived what look like a bad crash. I guess that HA after his name stands for half angel.......

Hi Yes it is the identification number on the side of the aircraft. Do not know when the term call sign was first used, but fitted better in the report

Cheers

Thanks Beanie!

Minalmist: Don't sweat it, those balloon kills are iffy. The sim seems to give credit to whoever last did damage. It could be that friendly A.A. actually shooting at you caught the balloon. I've had a case where it appears that Archie actually got credit for a plane that I downed, so it seems to happen!

Minalmist: It'd be a shame if in a future mission you set up right behind Scott and your machine gun's trigger jammed. ar15 Preferably without other witnesses. The nerve. smile

I imagine the 'call sign' made it easier to identify who was who from a distance. In a furball and trying to find your leader? 'B 21' might be easier to remember than a specific color or pattern.

(Unless your flight leader is Rittermeister von Richtofen of course)

Rick: That was quite the duel you had. Command having you fly solo escort though - I wonder if YOUR Major Scott has it in for you.

Bloody hell, chaps, I finally was able to start my campaign. I've been delayed by a new gaming rig build, and a titanic battle getting my CH HOTAS set up and working.

Without further ado, I present 2nd Lieutenant Holden McGroin

Lt. McGroin had an exciting first mission, which was a recon escort of a flight of R.E.8's. We came upon our escort flight while it was being assailed by a group of Hun Albatros scouts. We dove into them and broke them up. A wild melee ensued, in which I was lucky enough to bag two of the Huns. I claimed two Alb. II's, which have yet to be confirmed.

Alas, even with our best efforts, all R.E.8's were shot down while we were in the middle of the tussle. Holden hopes to do better in his next mission.
