Rodney was also a good 7 knots slower than Hood. The only BBs in the British livery that had a hope of keeping up with Bismark were the KGV class BBs, they were only a few knots slower. The next closest were the WW1 vintage Queen Elizabeth class which could make 25 knots at best. This was great for a WW1 battleship but not adequate to keep up with the new class of fast battleships. I wouldn't be suprised if the USS North Carolina would have left the Atlantic if the Bismark had survived the encounter. Ironically, if the Bismark had made port I also doubt the Brits would have sent the Prince of Wales to Singapore.

I was just going to mention USS North Carolina.

Frankly, I think she could have taken Bismarck.

So...how long until someone decides to remake this film? It seems a bit too good a story for them to leave it alone.

I'm thinking it will star Channing Tatum, be directed by Zack Snyder, and have a soundtrack by Trent Reznor.

And of course it will replace the Brits with Americans. Never mind the fact that the US wasn't in the war yet in April 1941. For Hollywood that's a minor issue.

A Hollywood remake?

I can see it clearly: after bombarding Pearl Harbour the Bismarck gets sunk by the intrepid crew of a US destroyer, using the clever tactic of disguising themselves as Japanese until they get close enough to launch a torpedo right down Bismarck's ventilation shaft.

There will also be a HOT nurse saved from a sunk hospital ship, an afro-american ship's cook who through bravery earns the respect of his (white) superiors and some bumbling Brits with funny accents who basically just get in the way of the US boys doing their stuff, winning the war.

yep

What a nice coincidence. I was actually quite impressed with the model work in that film. It looked pretty darn good!

Classic post. smile

Oh and of course, the film would star Ben Affleck.

Is there a throw up smiley on SimHQ?

Thanks!
Fascinating read... especially (to me) the elements regarding the crew's morale and factors affecting it.

Spielberg has certainly shown prowess in directing historical-based films. Empire of the Sun, Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln and Schindler's List are all first rate films.

Interesting how the accounts of the Interesting how the accounts of the Bismarck crew in the interviews rate the Hoods gunnery as very good when in fact it was quite bad.

From the interrogation link :

" The gunnery of "Hood" has been described by Kapitnleutnant von Mllenheim-Rechberg as exceptionally good. The opinion of other prisoners was that "Hood," having got "Bismarck's range, would have created heavy damage with her next salvo had it ever been fired. They considered that they had a very lucky escape. "

I suspect that the subjective impression, when huge shells are being lobbed and exploding in your general vicinity, is that the guy doing the lobbing is pretty damn good even when he, in fact, is not wink

True, but the Hood was not even firing on the Bismarck but rather was targeted on Prinz Eugen.

Eyewitness accounts can be very wrong.
