That's not dismal! I died on my second mission in the Eindecker campaign, that's dismal!

the only bird more dismal than this dangerous French invention may well have been the Eindecker. No xenophobia here I swear....but for sheer inherent malignity of machines on which mens lives depended....the French have no equal....read up on the Chauchat machine gun for example. On the other hand, for historic wines that take second place to none.....no offense intended pls...

well, after 4 tries against a single DIII in QC, I'm afraid that my previous statement that I couldn't do much worse than before may have been premature. shot down 3 times, wings ripped off once, and not a single shot at my opponent. How do you guys see anything with that top wing blocking half the screen, and the windscreen frame another quarter? I won't go into being out-turned by the d3, or stalling most of the time, but wasn't the noop's claim-to-fame its maneuverability? well, if that's the case, then, well, damn, I suck.
oh well.

oh well. Visibility isn't superb, it's true, the Lewis doesn't help. I find keeping my nose to the horizon helps with stalling and don't use much rudder, just pull back on the stick. I ran a few against 3DVa's and, while I wasn't turning circles around them, I did keep them at bay. The big problem was that they could just take their ball and go home whenever they wanted to and there was nothing I could do to catch them...

A little trick I learned to get a wider view lofty. Before you take off, lean into the screen a bit with your TrackIR keeping the gun sight lined up then hit F12. When you pull your head out, you'll have a noticeably wider perspective. Zoom out one step by hitting the '[' key has a similar effect. Or do both!

Rick_Rawlings: Thanks! Robert_Wiggins: Peabody's very snobbish. Then again, I don't expect him to live long, so he won't be missed as much. corsaire31/Adger: Wow, you're right. That's what I get for not looking closely at everyone's pictures. I went for a pic of someone who looked a bit snobbish. Now, since despite everyone's excellent advice I expect to die horribly, a little more writing before risking life and limb. ******* April 1, 1917
3hI can't sleep. I spent the first half of the night dreaming several nightmare scenarios: In the first, my flight escorted some reconnaisance planes and encountered an enemy force of equal strength. As we closed in, an enemy squadron preparing to land happened to notice us. I dove low and ran, tore my wings, and furrowed my own grave. In the second I was in a spinning dogfight and holding my own, when again fabric tore and wings warped. I couldn't break out the turn and slammed into a wheat field. The third time I managed to land, overshot the field and ran into a fence. The fourth time my dream self remembered to turn instead of run, turned to sharply and collided with one of my enemies. (1) God's blood, I'm going to die out here. 4hI walked out to commune with my valiant machine. One guard on patrol challenged me. I let him know who I was, and that it certainly wasn't "meat." Once I'd convinced him of his error (which took some minutes due to his intellect), he backed down like any good commoner. I entered the darkened hanger and hung my lantern on a peg. Her official name is A6497. If we survive the next few days, I shall have to do better. Other than some ominous patches on the lower wings she could have come straight from the factory. I ran my fingers along the fuselage, tracing her more by touch than sight. I felt... I don't like to name it and never will aloud, but for you dear reader it was dread. Foreboding. Like the weight of an unpleasant destiny was about to bear me down - for good. Father always said I was good for little except perhaps avoiding disgrace. This is my one chance to prove him wrong. I can't fail. I can't. "You should be resting, meat." It's Lieutenant Molesworth, in his undershirt and breeches, standing in the doorway with folded arms. "You won't be helping us if you fall asleep at the controls." "I'm inspecting my machine, sir." Not quite a lie. Molesworth's father was a colonel in India, he's one of the few men I can respect. He smirked. "You should have done that when you landed." Molesworth took my lantern and paced over. "Instead you turned it over to the mechanics and walked away. Why?" Simple. I didn't want to get dirty. "That's their job, sir." "It's your job also. That's how you learn about your machine." He touched one of the wing spars with his free hand, then continued before I could retort. "What's your oil level?" "How should I know? That's their..." "Right. Are you fully fueled? Are your wings patched and are those holding? There's a line running through this spar." He pointed. "Has it always been there, or is it beginning to crack? You're not going to know these things if you aren't taking care of it after each flight." "I don't..." I grit my teeth. "I would expect them to fix it if something was wrong." "Oh, aye. But men make mistakes. Or they forget. Do you want to bet your life on it?" My turn to fold my arms and look away. "No.." "No, what?" "Sir. No, sir." Molesworth nodded and handed me the lantern. "Then I'll leave you to your inspection. Breakfast is at 0600." And so said inspection began in earnest. At least it gave me something to do. I apparently don't know as much about engines as I should, but I could check the fuel. The wing patches were fine. There was a thin crease in the wing strut...but the housing attaching it to the wings looked secure. I was still at it when the sky began to lighten and Molesworth returned to me, this time in flight uniform. "Breakfast, meat." I informed him I wasn't hungry, which was quite true. In fact, my stomach was making a serious attempt to form a giant knot. "Too bad. The 60th doesn't fly on empty stomachs. Captain's orders." (1) All practice sessions. Yikes.

. Wow! Great to see so many new recruits. CatKnight, well done on young Peabody's introduction. He strikes me as a tad priggish. Fletcher Greene has arrived at Filescamp Farm and is a young man bent on revenge, as shall soon be revealed. Best of luck everyone! Lou .

Sorry can't help on this one, my TrackIR 5 has been flawlessly working everyday for years. (so did my TrackIR 4 before until it died at once one day) Just realized that this afternoon is rugby H-Cup final between Toulon (yeah ! pilou-pilou !) and Saracens, and tonight is Champions League final Real / Atletico. Guess that first mission will have to wait until tomorrow night...

major Trackir problem - it's not responding, and if I look at its main screen, the little camera part is almost all filled with red background. I've changed nothing on the settings, nor have I changed my real life setting, I've un- and reinstalled the software, tried different filter settings, and still no go. Honest, I know I'm meat in only a few missions, but I really don't want to drop out because of 'engine problems.' Anyone ever have this issue? I'm going to take a guess based on your input. Usually the red background light is always on and only turns green when it detects your head gear. Check your relector surfaces to see that they are intact. Just a suggestion. post this problem in the Tech Forums. It will likely get more appropriate attention there.

Great start, Robert! I'll admit I was a bit nervous when that other nupe showed up right in front of you! Also, who planted that tree right at the end of the runway approach!?!
