Not quite sure I have the right board, but we'll give this a go.

Greetings everyone! I'm Colin, and over the weekend I picked up WOFF (and have learned new and horrifying ways to die, including ramming a tree.)

I've only recently started flight sims after taking many, many years off. Over the last few months I started with War Thunder, wanted something with a little more meat and drifted to IL-2, uninstalled Rise of Flight in a pique of rage, and finally landed here after reading promises of the entire front being simulated around me.

So far my experience has been ... humbling in terms of survival, and awe inspiring in immersion. While on patrol I've watched my mates and wondered what they might be like, and how they might feel about all this: I had one wingman whose claim was rejected the day I joined and followed my mad dashes across the map: A kill-hound, like me. Most of my flight leaders probably scowled whenever I'd dart off to hunt a balloon, only to run back with half an enemy Jasta in tow.

Hopefully you won't mind the occasional newbie question, and I look forward to settling in.

Welcome to WOFF Cat. As you have found out, its a cruel world! Like you, I used to be a kill hound but it will not work in WOFF. You will die quick. Please join us in one of Ricks challenges that he puts on. It is a blast and gives you a whole new level of immersion. Watch your six.

Welcome we are glad to have another in the mess. I like you tend to disobey my flight commanders and hunt on my own. Like Lou and the rest said you do do not live long, but what a shooting star you make as you live fast and die young. I am starting to try their way, but it is hard. Good luck and Happy Hunting in the skies of Flanders

Welcome to the fray CatKnight!

I see some good advice has already been given so I won't repeat it.
I will say you will love this Sim for it's historical accuracy and it's fantastic AI.
Be patient and use Quick Combat to hone your skills and learn the capabilities of your craft and the enemies craft

Best regards

Welcome! You'll find the members here helpful, patient, and with great senses of humor.

My main tip: every time you go off on a mission, make it your goal NOT to bring down an enemy machine, but to get back home alive. Longevity is the key to running up an impressive score in WOFF.

Thank you everyone!

You can tell alot about a community by the way it responds to newcomers. There are some out there .... ooh boy.

I will indeed hunt down those mods, and hope to see you in the air once I figure out how...

...to...

...fly this...

No, not that way! *CRASH*

Hey CatKnight, if you check this thread there are quite a few videos of different planes being flown that will give you some idea of what is possible in this sim. Look up "Hellshade" on youtube and go through all his videos, great stuff! Play lots of Quick Combats, just flying at first, then against Novice AI types, then work your way up. Try to land at the end of each QC to practice that (watch out for fences!) When you do QC missions, make sure to check "Pilot Never Dies" to avoid some extra pilot re-creation later... Also, it helps in the workshop settings to select the option for QC mission to not be counted for Campaigns, you can get some weird results otherwise!

Let us know if you ha(V)e any more questions...

RR

edit: I went a wee bit Sco-ish there for minute!

MACHINE GUN FIRE: CAMBRIN by ROBERT GRAVES (September 25 1915)

The torn line wavers, breaks, and falls. 'Get up, come on!' the captain calls 'Get up, the Welsh, and on we go!' (Christ, that my lads should fail me so!) A dying boy grinned up and said: 'The whole damned company, sir; it's dead.' 'Come on! Cowards!' bawled the captain, then Fell killed, among his writhing men.
