With all the mods out and the occasional official update is there somewhere to find out what has been updated lately.

I confess i don't play much and i have the STEAM version so it's probably all automatic.

Yes, steam will automatically update you to the latest version of KSP.

The latest version has seen the addition of random asteroids which you can intercept and capture and relocate (even put them in orbit around kerbin if you desire)



As for mods, well I think scott manley has a pretty good idea of where to start.
