I just published a "Gunnery manual, beginner level for German WWII armor Sim enthusiasts" as I never found anything complete answering my questions about details.

As sometimes I see questions asked about armor sims by new comers, I know by experience that it is one thing to get a sim to work perfectly on a PC. It is also another, to make sure that all system simulated are understood and properly used without frustrations and discouragements.

Which lack thereof insure the longevity of simulation games.

I hope it will be helpful!

The second shortcut is a direct download

Hi Gunnyhighway,

It seems somehow you can read my mind,
I was asking information about the width, length & height of ww2 tanks in order to use the gunsight properly a few days ago and now you make an excellent manual out of it.
Thank you very much.
I really appreciate it.

Hi Gunnyhighway,

I noticed this thread on my way to the WOFF flight sim that I check every day.

So far I have steared clear of tank games as seem to not have any instructions on how to fire.
What games or games are these instructions based on?

I may give a tank sim a go again. What would you recommend for a complete beginner?
Somewhere I have the old T34 from Battlefront that I could never work out. I may ever have a copy of the old original Steel Beasts that I never tried but not sure if it was only third person view, and I may no longer have that one. But I would consider getting what was the easiest one for beginners. Need somthing that I can save anywhere mid mission if possible, as I ofter dont have time to complete whole missions at one time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards MarkL

Steel beasts has many fully playable tanks APC/IFV's
It does not have any WW2 Armour though,
Not sure if you would be able to get the original SB working.
Depends what operating system you use.
To be honest its come a hell of a long way since it was first released
You could try a temporary licence for a month for ten /dollars/euro to see if its for you.
There is a hell of a lot of support for newbies over at SB.com

Hi MarkL,

This manual is for WWII historical sims, as the usage of gunsight is the only way to shoot.
It will work with many sims.

It is based on researching sources listed at the end of the manual, and experience gathered playing sims for 20 years. The WWII armor sims which I still play, are also listed in the sources.

Now only one sim name came in mind, reading your post:

"Steel Fury-Karkov 1942" is the safest and sure way to go, different level of difficulties, addressing different level of skills, good AI, many missions, no MP missions.

The community is alive and will help you if you feel the need to ask.

There are others WWII sims, yet this one fits the needs you described.

Here is their forum: http://graviteam.com/forum/index.php?board=1.0
Here is the company home page: http://graviteam.com/

Of course, if you feel like more modern Armor, and want to use a sim that is also used at professional levels by some countries to train their tankers, then as Marko indicated Steel Beast pro PE is a great way to go.

The gun sights are different, and my manual won't help you their.

Sincerely,

Fluctuat Nec Mergitur

Sincerely,

But your manual will give anyone a good primer on using the mil system with gunsights. Which although the sights are not exactly the same many modern tanks fall back to a mill type rangefinder sight when the laser goes down. Steel Beasts models that, if I remember right.

Good work gunny...

The "mil-method" is pretty universal and can be used in any simulation that uses direct fire assets.

The trick is to know the exact mil numbers of the sights stadia-lines, and the dimensions of your target :-)

So for the "german vs CCCP" WWII stuff, your manual is on the spot ;-)

Sincerely,

Thanks for the tip, I will give "Steel Fury-Karkov 1942" a try in the near future. I just purchased Graviteam "Operation Star" from GamersGate last month. I have not started it yet but hope to soon, so another of their games should fit in well.
Just need more time, but I look forward to trying these war games soon.

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Thank you for the interest and the encouragements, I do appreciate it.

I am finishing the second manual using Soviets gun sights of 18 different tanks, spanning over several sims and MMO, handmade illustrations exclusively (30), multiple gunnery tables for 40 WWII German targets over 280 meters away, etc...40 pages of introduction and reinforcement to the habits of using stadia metric system for distance and range estimation in WWII armor simulations.
