They are. Apex predators are important. Deer in my area are rampant and the woods are paying the price. Coyotes have made their way here, but I don't think they really fill that niche. Wish I had time to deer hunt.

Ahhhh....it's not the 'lack' of coyotes here, it's the abundance of them. With NO predator to take them out, they're like 'forest rats'. That's why we need wolves.
The hunters take out the deer, and the cars on the road .... rolleyes.
We don't have an over abundance of deer.
We have an over abundance of porcupines, raccoons, skunks, and COYOTES.
We need wolves to correct all that.

We have bears, but they can't do it all.......but I'm greatful for the black bears we do have.

It just needs to be balanced out, like nature intended.

In the end, it's all about the birds.
Without control and balance, we'll lose the birds.
That.....would be a worldwide 'disaster'.

Without birds and bats;
The ground, everywhere, would be 3 feet deep, in bugs....within ten days.

Three FEET.

Except of course the north and south pole.
But hey, northern Michigan is cold enough....... wink

Have run into Timber Wolves 4 times in my life in the wilds of Northern MN, They are remarkable animals to watch.
My last time was in 1985 after taking a road trip to Giants Ridge Ski area for a few hours of Snowboarding. My
folks had a house in Silver Bay along Lake Superior and drove 85 miles back into the Iron range. Pulled a groin
muscle boarding after getting hit by outa control skier and was on my way home getting close to dark. Big
white tail deer jumps off the snowbank in a panic on the road in front of me just before hitting it, and as
i slowed down to avoid the hit 2 wolves hot on its tail run across the hood of my 86 Dodge Omni. Talk about
close encounter. Stopped for few to think about it all the while my pulled groin muscle was saying enough, move
along. Long road ahead.

The most awesome part is, we are heading to Yellowstone this June. Cannot wait to go.

My other encounters were not as fun.
