2001. Biggest snoozefest I've ever tried watching.

Gravity for sure. Haven't such such overhyped nonsense in years.

The Hobbit movies. I'm a massive LOTR movie fan and watch them quite often but the new hobbit movies are a snooze fest. They feel drawn out and it never reaches those crazy climactic moments that make all the lull periods worth it and stand out on its own.

Wolf of Wall Street. While I didn't think the movie was bad, it was just 45 minutes too long, too much filler.

If we have to go back a bit, The Godfather trilogy. One of these stables in cinema but I can't for the life of me get through them all, I've managed to fall asleep every single time. Dreary mess.

It does if you are "A Dapper Dan Man", and it also gives a pleasing odour, though in space no-one can smell your hair treatment.

This thread has been a fascinating read so far and it just goes to show that a film will never have a 100% consensus either way. There are people who think the Godfather is boring crap and I'm sure there are some people out there who think the Larry the Cable Guy movies are brilliant. smile

I found the movie entertaining enough, but after looking back I thought WTF did I just watch a movie about one of the biggest fraud in history and all I saw was a man consuming copious amounts of drugs and shagging prostitutes.
I really didn't have a clue what the fraud was all about which is quite an achievement for a 3 hour long movie that is rated 8.8 on IMDB.

Instead of repeating those already listed, I'll add new ones.

Black Swan. Don't understand why the film was made, it seemed to be leading somewhere but it didn't.

Les Miserables. A so-so musical turned into a so-so film.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Well, the remake, I didn't see the original. Ho-hum.

Inception. Was it good? Yes. Was it AWESOME!!!!!! like many made it out to be? No. It was just a pretty good film. Why the hype?

Little Miss Sunshine. Didn't even watch the whole thing, couldn't get into it.

Crash. Tried to watch it, also couldn't.

Lost in Translation. If this was supposed to be a comedy, it wasn't that funny. If it wasn't, I don't know what it was supposed to be other than slow and plodding.

I'll stop here.

Pretentious. The only good scene in that entire film is Bill Murray performing for the Suntory whiskey commercial.

I can't say I've met many people who dislike the new Battlestar. I am a fan boy though, as I loved the original series and thought it was light years ahead of Star Trek from the same era. IMO the new Battlestar is pretty much the best Sci-Fi series ever put on cable TV.

You and I should probably never go to the movies together... biggrin

Kontakt5, it seems the common theme in hollywood these days is the remake so maybe there is a chance. What I wouldn't give for a rated R star wars movie...

Jedi Master, I really enjoyed the original series of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I just feel the original actors were more believable. BUT, I have always tended to rate movies I have to read a little bit higher. I mean as an English speaker I can tell when an English actor is forcing the issue. Foreign films...well I have no idea.

I didn't think Black Swan was really all that great either.
Inception I liked, but I do think it was a little longer than it should've been.
Les Mis...don't care. I can't stand people singing all the time, it just doesn't work, sounds forced and I can't get into it even if it IS well done. I wouldn't know.
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo....I very much liked the original with Noomi Rapace. The remake sucked, although I did like Daniel Craig. Noomi was just far better at her role, even if it meant reading subtitles. The subsequent movies in the trilogy didn't grab me as much as the first. I thought it odd that they had nothing to do with the main plot of the first.

Lets add:
Sucker Punch. Yes, I get it, but it was really a bunch of cool scenes barely strung together with a cheap excuse of a plot.
Drive. Ryan Gosling isn't bad, but he's just so damned boring in that flick. The movie didn't seem to know what it was and fell completely flat IMO, even with a good cast.

An in that, you missed the point. Alex is a violent thug, but loves culture in the form of Beethoven. He needs controlling, but the means used by the (corrupt?) state are as reprehensible as his own behaviour.

When you consider the violence in the film in context to the cinema of the time: Wild Bunch, Dog Day Afternoon, French Connection, The Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it isn't that special in its violence, only that it understood violence better than most of its contemporaries.

That could very well be true, but on the other hand why is it notable that Alex loves culture? Does a violent person have to be an uncultured person? Hannibal Lecter would say no!

As far as its contemporaries go, the violence is either justified by the story, or in the case of the horror movies, necessary by definition. You can't have horror without violence, either physical or psychological. None of the rest were violence just for the sake of violence, the violence was as necessary to the story as it is to a war movie. A Clockwork Orange used violence the way porn uses sex - as the purpose for making the movie, with a story thrown in almost as an afterthought or so moviegoers don't feel ripped off at paying good money to see a film that's not even an hour long.

"Gravity" was a movie about George Clooney preferring to float off into space and die over spending one more minute with a woman his own age.

That's the point of the novel at least- the state uses violent and coercive techniques just as much as an individual running amok, the images they show to Alex shows you those of state violence far more destructive and pervasive on a larger scale than a few individuals in the streets.

As for the film, it probably attracts all kinds of zany people for the subject matter, and not all of them probably bother to think about delving into topics of individual 'free will' vs. society.

That's the point: the violence isn't justified: its unrestrained, pointless, anarchic. And no-one really knows how to deal with it. I would argue it encompasses the violence of the real world much more effectively than those which neatly encapsulate it within the plot or character. The disturbing thing about Clockwork Orange is that this behaviour is "normal" in its world, and Alex and the Droogs are just one of many, many groups of "have nots" inflicting the same violence on the "haves" and on each other. As for Beethoven, I suspect that was Burgess, a trained classical musician and composer, playing with those who thought that rock'n'roll was the end of civilisation... In the book, Alex turns to Scripture, not for redemption, but for the violent bits wink

And in the original version, as written, discovered redemption from a stranger and love, after being failed by society, the medical profession, the church and his family and friends.

Suppressed in the US version until after 1986, and not part of the 1971 film, this 21st chapter is an important part of the arc of the story.

I think A Clockwork Orange is best watched after you've read the book, the same can be said about 2001: A Space Odessey, the books just give that extra bit of information that is missed from watching it.

The Shining is so much different from the book that it actually becomes interesting to see where it deviates.

There is only one reason I can't fully agree with you here. I will DVR any movie that has Michele Rodriquez in it. Sorry I just have a soft spot for that little hottie. Fast and furiousers...yep. Resident evil...yep. Blue crush...muted...yep. Some crazy movie with wild dogs...yep.

Inception...it was alright I guess. BWWAAAAHHHHHH!

What I am amazed at by this thread is some of you will watch some crazy crap. Les Mis, black swan, little miss sunshine... neaner

The first time I watch gladiator I was thrilled. With subsequent viewings I realized how bad it was and how little actually happened in it.

And finally any horror movie that is not rated R. Jump scares are not horror. Disturbing atmosphere and reckless violence are.

And of course, all three of these are Kubrick films. The man was brilliant indeed.
