I just 'invested' in this one. It reminds me of when computer gaming had a heart and soul. Picked up the Origin 325i. That is one sexy ride.

Erm, why is the ship banking? In space.

The g force stuff is way over modeled IMHO. I hope it is one of the things they address sooner than later.

As for "banking" I dont think it is as much banking as much as it is the pilot shifting around the cockpit when the ship rolls.

And we as its creators don't feel ready to hear your annoyed jabber about it.

Star Citizen is taking a Lucas approach to space combat - take the fun stuff from WWII dogfighting and space-ize it. Star Citizen is going a lot further with integration of some physics, but it's still "make it feel WWII"-ish to me.

VERY nice eye candy, for sure. Will be interesting to see how this game develops once it is released.

Well, while you don't have aerodynamic lift / airfoil concerns in the vacuum of space, there are other considerations:

1. Pilot's still have better tolerance of positive G acceleration (pushing him down into the seat) than of negative G acceleration. If you need to track a target that is moving "up" and to the "left", you'll get the best G force tolerance by rolling enough to the left to place the G force vector from your upward pitch so that it's going straight down through your torso/butt.

2. The ships have (maneuvering) thrusters that can thrust to translate as well as pitch, yaw and roll. On most ships though, the main engines point to the rear (I don't know how much gimbaling they are including) and that thrust magnitude is way more than the maneuvering thrusters can provide. We may find that the best combination of keeping the ship moving fast (to make it harder to be hit) while getting the ship's nose pointed at the desired target is a combination of high engine thrust combined with pitch, yaw and roll as needed. Time will tell.

3. There is more than one mode of flight control. There is an on board computer system that does a fly-by-wire type of interpreting the pilot's inputs demands and then controlling the ships engines and maneuvering thrusters to provide what it thinks the pilots wants. There is some sort of manual mode that gives the pilot more direct control... which may prove to be very difficult for some to manage, especially when some thrusters have taken damage.

Everything about this so far is pre-alpha, and Chris is using a gamepad, so I'm not surprised how crappy that was, lol. The asset, a Hornet in this case, is near final as far as modelling goes and is just magnificent. The Hornet is the 1st of the major game assets to get the PBR pass, Cryengine's Physics Based Rendering, for the super-detailed materials textures.

Still, more work on the HUD and HMD, a lot of FM tuning in the upcoming DFM before this looks playable. I just can't wait to walk around my Starfarer in PBR someday, 90m of space tanker hulking above me on the pad.

Yeah it looks great, but still looks like it has a long way to go. The ship movement seems too quick and arcadey to me, there's not enough weight when you thrust in a different direction. Also I really hope the external view gets disabled. Yeah its cool to see your ship but I don't like it from a space sim gameplay perspective.

While the animations look cool and will be great for the single player game, I can see them getting old for other game modes and taking up too much time.

I'm looking forward to just flying around in free flight.
