After watching the UI video I was pretty worried about the HUD in the game. It looked like they were going for flashy instead of useful. They hired the guy who did the Ironman Movie HUDs.

Then they hired a guy who worked on military huds. Now it is starting to look like a useful HUD system.

This next picture is from a Saitek interview/tour.

That HUD looks a lot better. It is a least more compact. I wonder though what the current target HUD looks like.

Certainly that HUD looks better (i mean better, not prettier or surprising) than what was showed previously. Flight simmers like most of us here will apreciate and welcome the more clean design.
Not avid simmers, not so much, since most of that kind of players like flashy/shinning stuff more. biggrin.

How do you know they hired someone who worked on military HUD? You read it on the forums?. I missed that info smile.

Thanks for the heads up by the way.

Does anyone else not like the missile lock animation? It obscures a lot of the screen and having 4 projectile-looking things flying at the target seems a bit much when the space is being filled with gunfire.

Yeah I found that distracting too, at first I thought it was some weapon being fired, hopefully it's something we can modify or disable, but nevertheless pretty cool example of what they've been able to do with the cryengine HUD.

Yes, very much agree about the missile lock, massively over engineered IMHO. The whole idea of a HUD is to aid you in targeting, not hinder you! I hope they change it before release.

I didn't like it either. It reminded me of the Predator's missle launcher locking thing.

I just have to keep telling me this is a game. I mean he has to get within 100 feet in order to lock a missile. And the radar should have painted that enemy hundreds of miles away unless it went behind something. Current military tech is more advanced than what they show in the game. The missile stuff is so bad it is like shooting civil car cannons compared to what our modern fighters can do... Then I tell myself... it's just a game... game balance... just a game...

Thats a good point, tbh I really hadn't thought about that side of things.

I would imagine (hope) that they have designed it that way to keep the combat erring on the side of a white knuckle ride as opposed to a sit back and relax style of fire and forget system, that would have the attacker nonchalantly pressing a couple of buttons while sipping an aperitif and watching their missiles fly off into the blackness of space with some gentle visual/audio cue that goes off in a further ten minutes informing you that your target had been destroyed.

While the victim of said encounter would be merrily flying along when "WHAM" your vaporized, quickly followed by "WTF!!! and to quote CR... screaming..."this is bulls#it" smile

Yeah, I wonder how this will turn out for HOTAS users?
But since this will be a game for the "masses" im not expecting a HOTAS to be of any advantage to a player compared to mouse/keyboard =(

No matter tho, I will refuse to even start this game with anything less then a HOTAS. Ill gimp myself to oblivion before I go mouse/keyboard, and even then ill be more likely to uninstall it altogether =)

Pretty sure it will have HOTAS support as they've put out videos of them using a Saitek X-55 Rhino HOTAS. Either way, pretty much any current HOTAS has software that will let you program them how you see fit. I have several games that don't support HOTAS (or even joysticks) out-of-the-box; but I can get it to work just fine with a little tweaking in the software.

IMO it's a non-issue

You pay so much money to these jokers and they cannot even get the ergonomics of the HUD correct ?

A HUD does not have to be cluttered to be functional, nor should the weapons and tracking systems get neutered to give white knuckle combat. Just take a look at the HUD and combat dynamics on Elite Dangerous. From what that has been showcased on playtesting, the systems, avionics and combat dynamics in Elite is very good and they did it with a clean, compelling, believable cockpit interface.

I'm not an Elite fanboy. I'm equally annoyed with Elite's money grubbing early access 'over-salesmanship' which is why I have not pledged a cent to them.

But by comparison this SC HUD looks like an explosion of neon lights of the type you usually get at the local strip joint. Hope you poor ba$tard$ will get your money'$ worth. I have seen human orifices less cluttered than the SC HUD.
