Anyone have any advice on attacking enemy airfields. I just lost my best pilot to date attacking one of the darned things for the 4th time. On my 3rd or 4th pass my fuel tank was hit and as I was gliding down dead stick near an army base I was peppered severely with machine gun fire which mortally wounded me. Some top brass kept saying it was crucial to the war effort and we would hit it again, and again. I loaded my Pup out each time with rockets but it seems I cannot hit the broad side of a barn with the things. All I am able to do is make a hanger smoke a bit with the machine guns.

FYI, if you are forced down behind the lines, try to stay away from the army base near Reincourt.

I practiced airfield attacks in QC with bombs. I flew at 3000 ft leveled out with 3/4 throttle on a DH.5 and flew an approach along the length of the airodromes. Using the F4 key I would look directly down at 90 degrees from horizon and when the start of the edge of the airfield came right under my eye, I dropped the bomb load. It usually hit the second or third last drome. I kept doing this until I was pretty good at judging the lead required. As soon as you release the bombs start counting of seconds until they hit. This will help you judge where to release your bomb load when estimating lead required. You will get reasonably good at it after about 8 tries.

Just my suggestion!

If you destroy some targets (rather than just damaging them) the top brass might consider your mission more of a success and stop sending you back. Maybe try shooting up piles of crates or small tents, which you can destroy, rather than large hangers that you maybe can't. Worth a try.

Thanks for the advice, I think you may have it Scout as this works on Rail yards. I will look for crates and such if it happens again, and I am sure it will.

I like to dive straight down at a 90 degree angle, loose my bombs and then run the hell away before the fighters can intercept me. I hate airfield attacks, one of the most dangerous jobs in WOFF, short of balloon busting and escort jobs.
