Wow they really pooped on the traditional engine noise (probably the only recognizable thing about F1 for an average joe in the US like me). New regulations I assume? I don't watch racing often as it's not broadcast here very much, so I don't follow it.

I went to the Montreal GP during the V10 era. We sat at the end of the front straight and when the cars went by, I could shout at my wife and she couldn't hear me. You also felt it.

Watching the race the other night, the engines really sound crappy now. Cool with the turbo, when you could hear it, but that V6 just doesn't sound nearly as sweet. Especially when they had the camera and mic onboard. Cars were dropping left and right at the first and they commented on how bad they sounded, but the ones that were running right sounded just the same to me. LOL
However, it IS cool that racing is pushing technology that may in some way make it to everyday cars. They're trying to be more green in F1. Now it's a V6 turbo and of course the KERS system for boost in the designated areas.
I got to see about 30 minutes of the Melbourne race, and the sound didn't really bother me. It is different, sure. But there is still serious performance in there.
Overall I'm interested to see how the races change. My interest in F1 faded considerably during the last few years when one or two cars ran miles ahead of the grid, sometimes with the race (essentially) summed up from the first lap with only rare lead passing.
I didn't get to see enough on Sunday to get a feel for how things might change, but the opening laps seemed to benefit from some apparently lower initial acceleration (due to turbochargers, I guess) out of the corners.

Man they really did change that characteristic F1 sound.. Went to an NHRA race in Englishtown NJ in 2012. You could hear the nitro cars several mins from the track. Sounded like Godzilla in the distance.
To each their own but when I think of racing I think of loud powerful engines and the teams maintaining those mechanical contraptions. The new engines sound really sad, if NASCAR were to do this it would be a shadow of its former self.

Electric is very cool, it's just not a replacement. An electric-only offshoot of F1 would be pretty cool IMO. To me, enjoying a car, and by way of that racing, is a sensory experience. If you can't drive the car to feel it, at least hearing it is part of the excitement. I'd love to be able to go see some races, but not sure if that will ever happen.
