My Sopwith Pup career has hit an unusual snag. High command has decided to send my squadron of Pups on bombing missions. More than one. When I first read the mission briefing, I thought, okay, I'll be escorting some bombers, but no. We were supposed to be the bombers! And we were escorted ourselves by a group of Nieuport 23's, also carrying no bombs. Like the dutiful airman I am, I flew to the target area, waited to see what my flight leader would do. He appeared rather confused and aimless over the target, probably realizing that, well, Pups don't carry bombs! I ended up buzzing down and strafing a trench or two, without much effect, then going home. Next mission, same thing! Strafing trenches at low altitude is not good for my morale, or health. So, really, does "bombing", as described in the briefing, really mean strafing? Or is there some way to actually load some bombs on my Pup?

I have yet to be able to carry bombs on my Pup, but I did have a very fun balloon busting mission with Le Prieur rockets(I missed, alas).

wave I have a N-17 Driver who was sent to Machine gun a Rail Yard. Don't re call if it was called a bombing mission or just attack the thing.

Haven't seen that myself but you could always take rockets.

Interesting... What squadron are you flying with and what is the mission date?

It sounds as if the missions are being pulled from the Bomber file instead of the Fighter file, so the squadron might be wrongly coded as 'Bomber' instead of 'Fighter' in the OOB. Some squadrons are coded for both Bomber and Fighter (e.g. some Strutter squadrons), and will pull missions from both, but I doubt that a Pup squadron would have been intentionally coded as Fighter-Bomber. The OOB that controls this appears to be hard-coded within the WOFF Manager, so it is not something that we can change ourselves. Railyard attacks, on the other hand, can be pulled from the Fighter file (as can airfield attacks).

I was flying with 46 RFC on April 22, 1917. On reviewing the description of this squadron, it does indeed appear to be considered a reconnaisance-bombing squadron, though I never saw any two-seaters in this group, only Pups.

It's a moot point now, since my Pup pilot just met his demise.

Which brings up another point--my aforementioned late Pup pilot on his last day was flying autopilot at warp speed, waiting to get to some action, when he apparently had a collision with one of his mates. Going back to normal speed and getting out of autopilot, it appeared that my engine had been damaged by the collision, but still turning. Everything else worked fine. I had not been injured. I gently steered her to an open field on my side of the lines and set her down softly, and without visible damage, only to be told that I had just been killed! I have also had other pilots killed after colliding with a fence at about 3 mph. I don't think our gallant pilots can really be that fragile! This might need to be addressed in a future patch.

46 RFC started out life as a Corps squadron, equipped with the Nieuport 12. It became a fighting squadron in late April '17, and had begun to receive its first Pups earlier that month. However, we don't yet have the Nieuport 12 in WOFF, so the Pup is the only machine available. Hopefully, we will one day get the Noop as well.
Cheers,
shredward

We will remember them.
