but what was interesting about the article was that in 1868, according to wikipedia, 1/3 of the state police were former slaves.
I never would have imagined that.

The Bull's Head Tavern, in Abilene, had been established by partners, ex-lawman, Ben Thompson and gambler, Phil Coe. The two entrepreneurs had painted a picture of a bull with a large erect penis on the side of their establishment as an advertisement. Citizens complained to town marshal, "Wild Bill" Hickok.
