Hello mates,

I'm somewhat down after testing War Thunder, mostly ben flying the 109 today, and it just seems like the 109 E-3 is really broken compared to IL-2 1946 with HSFX 7 and Cliffs of Dover.

When I dared to raise the issue in comparison to the spit, the reactions ranged from "you can't fly" to working as intended or even agreement of my assesment.

I'd like to hear a second, or in this case third opinion.

How realistic is the 109 in their Historical Battle/Realistic (???) Battle mode and their Full Real Battle Mode (???) ?
To me it feels like you can only do boom and zoom and if you try to energy fight, you will get a horrible buffeting pretty soon, loose energy like crap and loose.

Stall Characteristics are very different to HSFX and or the Team Fusion Mod.

Has that merit?

Wolf

I don't expect the same experience from WT aircraft. It's a game game, like fast food. When I want gourmet, I go BoS or Il2 of one flavour or another. But I like all flavours!

Yep, keeps me entertained for about 20 mins, simply for the great graphics... but the whole system and logic of the game makes me sick of 'grinding' and I quickly bin it!

Don't go to MsDonalds and expect Carrabas .... It is what it is.

EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS ON WT!! I just signed up yesterday on WT and while it was fun for a little bit (love the graphics), but damn I got sick of it FAST!! I'll keep it for when I'm bored, but really I have so many real good flight sims already, WT might go the "deleted" route on my comp.

Polarwolf,

As others in this thread have indicated, if you're looking for a high-fidelity flight simulation, War Thunder is not the right stop for you. It's great for what it does - immersive multiplayer dogfighting action - but I wouldn't expect much more from it.

That said, it's got quite the following and is a very popular game. I may have to check it out sometime.

Shoot to Kill.
Play to Have Fun.

There is some fun off line play too. I had fun with taking a torpedo dive bomber and attaching ships.

For all that is said the game is still in development and we can hope they do fix the flight and modeling issues even if there are other issues.

Race you to the Mucky Duck!

WT isn't bad. It feels a lot like IL2. As for the FMs, they're at least distinctive among individual aircraft in Realistic Battles (avoid Arcade Battles). I'm not sure how authentic the FMs are, but it is what it is.

You have to accept WT on its own terms, and that includes flying against people who are using a mouse or a gamepad, and dealing with the whole grinding scheme. It's a fun diversion if you're looking for a dogfight against human opposition. But if you're expecting IL2, and strict history, you're going to be disappointed, at least for now. The game is under constant development, and that's encouraging, especially considering that it's free to play. Sure, you can spend money, but that's up to you. Another advantage is that you can play it on a Mac. I still can't believe that I'm playing an IL2-offshoot on a Mac Mini.

As for the 109, in general it can outturn American fighters, but you're going to need to boom-and-zoom against British and Soviet fighters. Same goes for the 190. As far as I understand, that was roughly the way things were historically.

This game needs a full mission builder so bad it hurts. I have read that 1.39 will have it. I hope they know what 'full mission builder' actually means. So far, slight mission editor is all we have seen. This game needs some player created carrier battles and the like. I fly (drink) alone. And online that means sitting duck.

Sorry for not replying in a while after starting it, I've been a bit busy with evening school exams.

As for playing WT it's side-job related and the question is how it compares to flight sims.

When I wrote this I was in WTF? after a Lagg-3 outclimbed me in a 109 E-3, and some other situations like that.

sorry for the necromancy and thanks for the other opinions.

I guess you have to consider the bolt-ons to the aircraft as well when comparing the two.

MY issue is I can only be interested in an offline flight sim for any length if it has a good campaign system. Otherwise I'm just fighting AI, on SP maps, and it gets old FAST.

When it comes to WarThunder, at least I find I can think about how the enemy will react, and find myself in some dynamic situations. When it comes to offline sims, I hate 'gaming the game' like trying to figure out how the ai behaves, will it run out of ammo, are we playing the same rules etc.

I like War Thunder. It works, has Oculus support, and it does what it's supposed to do, no more, no less.
