I finally picked up a PS4 today after watching some Second Son twitch streams and seeing that finally the PS4 has a fun great looking true nextgen hit for me to enjoy.

A couple of initial impressions:

Very pleasantly surprised with how well the PS4 controller feels, in the last gen owning both consoles, I preferred the XB360 controller to the DS3, but I have to hand it to Sony, the DS4 feels better than both lastgen controllers and the XBOne controller I tried at the store, definitely the best feeling controller of all so far.

Very impressed with the speed of the console and UI, swapping in and out of games and the playstation store and Netflix and live is really fast compared to both the PS3 and XB360, also I see a "Party" option so hopefully they also learned from XBL to improve the multiplayer ease of use.

So initial impressions for the PS4 is a good thumbs up from me so far, since I play with consoles plugged into my 23" 1080p PC monitor, I can really tell the difference from the gorgeous true 1080p graphics of these PS4 titles, Second Son looks amazing even compared to PC titles, and even the couple of PSN download titles I'm playing (Strider, Zen Pinball2) look terrific at 1080p instead of the jaggy mess I was used to with my PS3/XB360 on this monitor which doesn't have the best upscaling.

I will be keeping my PS3 and XB360 to play older titles, but really looking forward to enjoying nextgen titles on this PS4.

Also I'm a bit jealous that War Thunder isn't available here in the NA PSN region yet, for now just Euro PSN region, look forward to playing that and PlanetSide2 eventually, for now SS and FIFA14 will keep me busy.

PS. also glad to hear that an upcoming PS4 update will be unlocking the HDCP copy protection on HDMI for game recording, that was one thing that I always hoped for the PS3, and it sounds like Sony improved there too.

Yeah the ps4 interface is really slick. You can start and exit games really quickly. Playing BF4 on ps4 is lightyears ahead of ps3. I just became a playstation plus member. The free games are pretty cool as well. Got Dead Nation and Resogun they look fun.

You need plus to play most games online on ps4 I believe. I just got a years membership for my bday so I'm all set. My 14 day trial runs out this week I think so perfect timing.

Resogun is very cool, I love old school shooter type games with crazy weapons. Dead Nation does not start up for me I'm getting an error but I played it on ps3 and it's fun.

Resogun is really cool, especially for someone like me who used to play Defender at the arcades! very cool particle graphics too.

I remember some arcade game, early 90s where you flew a ship and had to pick up humans and carry them somewhere, seemed similar to Resogun. Was that Defender?

I really hope they release any of the R-Type games or top down arcade shooters like 1942 or 1943...those were my favorites. The ones where you keep getting the crazy weapon upgrades.

Yeah that was Defender indeed Resogun has a lot of similarity to it:

Hopefully with PS4 supporting indie titles we will get some good arcade shooters.

I'm looking forward to Mercenary Kings which is supposed to come out on PS4 next month and rumor has it that it might be the PSN+ free title for April:

Since my PS3 disk is full and there's a lot of PSN+ free games to download and play, I upgraded the PS4 drive from the default 500GB to a similar model 1TB 5400 RPM Samsung drive which cost just $60 so I could use the PS4 drive in my PS3.

Glad Sony made it so easy/cheap to upgrade the drive, took 5 mins to open the drive access case and swap the drives, now I will have a 1TB in my PS4 for all the new games and a 500GB in my PS3 for all the old games for just $60, and no proprietary drive BS like XBox, can't beat that.

Cool the upcoming PS4 1.70 OS update will include not just disabling HDCP, preload of digital purchases, and saving captured video to USB but also a Sony Vegas like video editor "SHAREFactory":

BTW did you already see this upcoming PS4 game?

Reminded me of R-Type a bit:

Are we ever going to see Youtube make an app for the PS4? I don't like the workaround so end up using the PS3 for more than the 4!

I know, me too. It's kinda sad I can do more multimedia stuff on my ps3 than the ps4. No music either which really sucks since my ps4 is now on my main stereo and all my music is on my ps3 in my bedroom now on crap speakers.

Wedge did you get The Show? How is it on ps4? Crazy load times? Is multiplayer still awful in the show series? I think I may stay away even though I'm a hardcore baseball nut and it looks amazing.
