My last two sorties I've encountered pairs of Rolands. On both occasions, as soon as they were engaged and started to maneuver defensively, they spun out and crashed.

Anyone else see the same?

Maybe mine were simply rookies.

I've been reading about Roland C.II's lately. They were regarded as difficult to fly, prone to spins, and damn near impossible to land.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.

Well, that must have been 'pilot talk exaggeration' - after all this type
was used a lot over a long period of time.

It's true that they were difficult to land and had a tendency to spin when handled too roughly.

I had a campaign pilot in a Roland Abteilung that was rated 'good'. I never saw any of my flight members spin. Maybe the Rolands you encountered had poor pilots.

Nowi, My advice through personal experience is to stay away from flight model discussions. The Rolands may fly like UFOs but no one will believe you. Overall Woff is fantastically historical and the FMs reflect that...but...the FMs are the most subjective part of Woff or any flight sim so no one can really truly say if they are dead on correct.

Goooood Luck!

I never flew a real one, but I've got a good number of flying hours both in RoF and OFF with the Roland and never had any problems, have been bombing, strafing, even dogfighting, never had big trouble landing (might have hit the ground a couple of times with the lower wing on bad airfields) It is quite fast for its time (forget escort by Fokker EIIIs, you'll have to wait for them) My only grief is a very slow climbing rate.

After getting the Albatroses adjusted, I'm trying to keep from pointing out other models' oddities. However, I hope that circumstances such as these are reported. If the AI can't fly specific models very well, without regularly stalling them on accident, then that should definitely be looked at, right?

It happened to me last night..one small burst of fire at the Roland and it tumbled down to earth never able to recover from it's spin.

I've had SPAD VIIs do that fairly regularly too. I didn't know whether it was just a lucky streak of pilot-killing shots or something else.

These Roland are quite nimble and dangerous dogfighters...one attacked me in a QC and after some turns (I was in a Pup), I managed to put a few rounds with a deflection shot as it was banking hard: it went immediately in a flat spin it never recovered from.

That was me you were shooting at... I can't fly SPADs biggrin

I think it was just some inexperienced pilots. The only Rolands I have flown against that crashed were all well ventillated before hand...

I agree with this statement, but how would you prove the AI can't fly the plane due to an FM oddity?

If several people have the same experience with Rolands, then maybe one way to see if there could be a problem would be to go to QC and dogfight against the Roland novice and then an ace. If both loose control after a few hits, then repeat once more and if it happens again.... there could be a problem somewhere which would need looking into.
