Maybe I am just missing something, but with wind checked in the workshop setting, I can't say that I notice any wind effect on the a/c in a campaign. Also, no sound of wind when in the cockpit mode.

Is this just meant to be a subtle effect, or should I actually be aware of it's effect on the a/c flight characteristics?

In OFF the wind could be brutal. I don't know if they toned it way down or what, but yeah, I don't seem to notice it much either. It seems to have no effect on takeoffs or landings and the wind sock does not usually match the direction we line up on the field. We seem to be taking off with the wind, if the sock is to be believed. I would like some further information about this interesting topic! thumbsup

it may have something to do with colliding AI. hopefully, the solution is not permanent, because I'm also missing the wind

Yes, I believe the wind effects were toned down due to it causing AI collision problems when formation flying. Hopefully it can be ramped up again at some point.

The wind sound in the cockpit I do find to be pretty quiet. Having it louder would help with sensing how fast your plane is going. Maybe some sound guru will experiment with a louder sound file for us. In the mean time I am going to play with turning the engine sound down and the cockpit sound up in the workshop settings to see if I can make it more noticeable.

Maybe the devs could comment on this? And perhaps there is a file value setting that a user could change to suit their simming preference?

The windsound itself should stay the same. It was made in a way that you can hear in your ears not the wind but the windrush, same like when you stick your face out of the window while driving the car. You don't hear the wind but only the rush. Depending on weather you will also hear in front of you, next to the rush in your ears, the wind itself. The worse the weather and wind is, the more you will hear the wind etc.

If you want to alter the wind, you will have to change it for each type of AC in the sound.cfg file.

e.G. for the albatros DIII you will find it here:

C:\OBDSoftware\WOFF\OBDWW1 Over Flanders Fields\aircraft\Alb_DIII_Sqd\sound

Inside the sound.cfg file you will find this section:

[WIND_SOUND]
filename=windbl1.wav
minimum_volume=3500
maximum_volume=9000
minimum_rate=1.0
maximum_rate=3.0
minimum_speed=10.0
maximum_speed=180.0

To make the wind louder while flying you will have to change the maximum volume. Stock is 9000. You can raise it higher to whatever. But beware. You might break something. Also it is just for each AC type, no overall setting. Everything you do, do it to your own risk. No support if you break something.

HTH

Cheers

Thanks Creaghorn;

Do you know if the wind buffetting effect in WOFF is variable in line with the weather. As some here have said they don't notice any buffetting. I know the Devs were trying to address the fact that it was too agressive in OFF but in WOFF it seems non existent.

Thanks for the info Creaghorn; good stuff. I may play around with the max setting on the Aviatik in my current campaign just to see what happens. Any idea if there is a max-max value not to exceed?

From what you said about 'no master control' I take it that the wind-rush sound is not affected by any of the volume settings in the workshop. I'll have to add that to my wish list, but of course I have no idea how difficult it would be for you guys to add that in some day.

Thanks Creaghorn. I was more curious about the wind buffeting effects when flying..if there is a value setting that can be tweaked?

I wouldn't recommend messing with wind buffeting.

After experiencing a large amount of formation collisions when on autopilot, I'm extremely glad they addressed the issue. If you change something back, then you may well get wingmates crashing into you regularly, which can downright ruin your death-enabled campaigns.

I don't notice sudden wind gusts but I can tell when there's a steady wind pushing against my aircraft, and have to counter with some bank & rudder in a specific direction. Most notable at higher altitudes.

I think there IS wind buffeting. At first I thought it was me, but my BE2c's get thrown around when near cloud in early 1915 even with the excellent autopilot on.

You may be correct. I really haven't noticed it and maybe I need to pay more attention. It was really aggressive in OFF. So much so that you could hardly draw a bead on an enemy plane with any accuracy. I haven't found the buffetting noticable so far, that is not to say it isn't there.

I just thought it was the proper flight model for a BE2.

Hope I didn't start a "tempest in a teapot", so to speak.

Perhaps I am just not aware of the wind buffeting effect when flying.

If the trade off is anything that would effect the AI flying/crashing, then it becomes a moot point IMO.
