D'oh, a dud engine did you in? That's one of my worst fears. I know it's perfectly realistic, but man what a way to end a career. I always always try to maintain my altitude over there so I have a better chance of gliding back if need be. Have had two engines die on me over the Line (which, if you read No Parachute, is also perfectly realistic) but have always managed to glide back. One of these days though...
Enjoy the delicious "Essen" over there. Bratwurst sounds so damn good to me right now.
That's right! My fault for not keeping altitude over enemy lines. I descended to take a pot shot at one of the balloons while the recon planes did their job as no enemy was in site. Then ordered my wingmen to attack the balloon. As I was climbing back up to mission altitude my engine sputtered and then just stopped. Thought it might be a stall, but couldn't get it started again even after I landed. Lost altitude in my turn towards the lines and didn't even make it to the front. THE END!
This was one of my most memorable missions including the other sim and OFF.
I have read No Parachute and many other WWI books and online documentary. I highly recommend Time Life Books "Knights of the Air"
