So here's a question: if you own the trademark, and all of a sudden it is unprotected, do you change the name to protect a mark and sell jerseys, etc. or do you keep the name, know you'll lose exclusive rights to it, and distinguish your official stuff with other protected marks, like for example the nike swoosh which is on official NFL jerseys, or the NFL shield which is on them.
I say the latter. Official merchandise can be protected by more than just the Redskin mark.
"For I know the plans that I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:11
Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Matthew 5:11
Indeed we call blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of the perseverance of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, because “the Lord is compassionate and merciful. James 5:11

So why didn't the US patent office think it was a derogatory term back when the team first adopted it? exactly, and all the other teams that us Indian names and logos. Unv of North Dakota had to change their logo. Good thing FSU has the blessing of the Seminoles to use their names, logo and Chief likeness during the games. They have a great relationship in FLA. Just part of the PC world we've become...

I wonder if the liberals would complain if they just changed the name to the Washington Indians.

Have any actual Indians complained or is it just a bunch of nosey white liberals who care?

There was a kids football team here called the Redskins. Some indians complained about the name.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Have any actual Indians complained or is it just a bunch of nosey white liberals who care? Yes from personal experience, and those that are not offended are called "apples". Red on the outside, white on the inside; just like the "Oreos" are called.

Heh, interesting. Stalin used a similar metaphor to describe Chinese Communists.
“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”

I am offended by the Roughriders. They really need to change that name.

Have any actual Indians complained or is it just a bunch of nosey white liberals who care? What I find offensive is that not one of these outraged media outlets has even one actual native American commentator/reporter to cover this issue. I cant remember the last time I saw a Native person in the media.

So why didn't the US patent office think it was a derogatory term back when the team first adopted it? Are you serious? The Redskins name was coined in 1933. Consider where this nation was in 1933. Consider the level of consideration to any people of color by the mainstream society in 1933. I wonder if the liberals would complain if they just changed the name to the Washington Indians. People with this simplistic view of the worls never cease to amaze me. Have any actual Indians complained or is it just a bunch of nosey white liberals who care? Yes from personal experience, and those that are not offended are called "apples". Red on the outside, white on the inside; just like the "Oreos" are called. That is deep.. I did not know that. As a white person, I am offended by the restaurant Cracker Barrel. That is funny.. but consider that unless it was a non white person who founded Cracker Barrel..
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
