US Patent Office says the name is derogatory.

I remember driving through an Indian reservation out west a few years ago and the Indian high school sports team was called the Redskins.

So why didn't the US patent office think it was a derogatory term back when the team first adopted it?

So here's a question: if you own the trademark, and all of a sudden it is unprotected, do you change the name to protect a mark and sell jerseys, etc. or do you keep the name, know you'll lose exclusive rights to it, and distinguish your official stuff with other protected marks, like for example the nike swoosh which is on official NFL jerseys, or the NFL shield which is on them.

I say the latter. Official merchandise can be protected by more than just the Redskin mark.

Indeed we call blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of the perseverance of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, because “the Lord is compassionate and merciful. James 5:11

exactly, and all the other teams that us Indian names and logos. Unv of North Dakota had to change their logo. Good thing FSU has the blessing of the Seminoles to use their names, logo and Chief likeness during the games. They have a great relationship in FLA.

Times change.

I'm 73 and you wouldn't believe some of the words that were in common use back in the 40's.

I wonder if the liberals would complain if they just changed the name to the Washington Indians.

Next year Ottawa gets a CFL team. It will be called the Red-Blacks. Not one word from the natives or people of colour. eek

There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Have any actual Indians complained or is it just a bunch of nosey white liberals who care?

There was a kids football team here called the Redskins. Some indians complained about the name.

Yes from personal experience, and those that are not offended are called "apples".

Red on the outside, white on the inside; just like the "Oreos" are called.

Heh, interesting. Stalin used a similar metaphor to describe Chinese Communists.

I am offended by the Roughriders. They really need to change that name.

What I find offensive is that not one of these outraged media outlets has even one actual native American commentator/reporter to cover this issue. I cant remember the last time I saw a Native person in the media.

Are you serious?

The Redskins name was coined in 1933. Consider where this nation was in 1933. Consider the level of consideration to any people of color by the mainstream society in 1933.

People with this simplistic view of the worls never cease to amaze me.
