there were 4 violent deaths a day in the first 6 months of the year.
source: Devil in the White City, by Erik Larson, coming later this year as a movie with DiCaprio as the homicidal doctor.

Great book, been by the street of his house of horrors. The MoS&I is the only building still standing from the WF of 1893.

Does violent = homicide, or does it include things like people dying in construction accidents, getting trampled by horse-drawn buggies, falling into the river and the like?

Interestingly enough, there is also speculation that he was Jake the Ripper who terrorized England. There was a time when he traveled outside the U.S. and the dates he was gone match the exact dates that Jack the Ripper was killing people in England. It was very interesting. He was killing people in Chicago around 1893 as well. It is believed that he may have killed over 200 people! I had no idea about that theory. Fascinating stuff!

The first serial killer in America was also from Chicago, H. H. Holmes. I saw a documentary about him, he had a "Castle" with secret rooms, torture chambers, death traps, etc. That's who this is about Interestingly enough, there is also speculation that he was Jake the Ripper who terrorized England. There was a time when he traveled outside the U.S. and the dates he was gone match the exact dates that Jack the Ripper was killing people in England. It was very interesting.
