It picks up after you move to the trucking warehouse and get your defensive outposts spread around the area so hordes aren't an issue. Try to just put outposts places they can feed you resources like construction and ammo. I run 2 greenhouses for food. The game picks up during all of that. Then seems to go to a time of just maintenance before the next part kicks in that I think takes you across the bridge to the next town.

Yeah, State of Decay is great and not a bad port at all.

The core game itself seems really good; but I was talking about the clunky/non-responsive controls, the terrible AI of your followers, the sub-par graphics, and absolutely no way to be sure the game saves (except by exiting the game).

I've already lost my main (and best) character a couple hours into the game, and now I basically have to start from scratch

Thast's part of what is so good about it. People die. I lost several on my first game. Then my main guy on a frivolous mission I didn't even think was hard... just bad luck with several hordes I didn't know were in the area. The good thing is that it's an rpg so you can build up another. I try to have a few built up now. Also, rotated through your characters and be sure each is well armed with a blunt or edged weapon as well as a silenced gun. A med and a snack too.
Pay attention to the calls for escort, distractions and zed hunts. Those runs are where your people die. Reset your outpost mines everytime you start up the game, first thing.

I understand that; but the only reason I lost him was because sometimes the controls don't respond unless you mash them like a controller lol. Also the graphics make me nauseous with the low FOV and crappy PPAA effects that make everything "shimmer"; I looked around for a fix but unfortunately there isn't one. I even tried forcing options thru the Nvidia CP but they don't seem to take effect.

I'm not giving up yet - it seems like a solid game at the core, I'm just kind of frustrated how lazily they ported it to the PC (which I guess I shouldn't be too surprised).

After a couple of very frustrating nights on Day Z, wasted mostly traveling starving, dehydrated and unable to stay alive long enough to catch up with the group--much less find a gun--this one is going on the shelf until they sort it out more. The limited loot is ridiculous. I have some issues with their gameplay choices as well, but that's my opinion and not as bad. Yes, I know, "alpha". Still, it should be further than this IMO when opened up for the public, especially taking in funds. Just my 2¢. One day it will be good and I'll have it, so it's ok.

So we tried some 7 Days to Die. Loot isn't hard to come by, the game looks better than expected, ran great, very smooth and has a fun crafting system. Once we got ports opened up to run the game, catching up with each other was easy--you actually spawn together--and we could even run a private server.

With any luck Rust will get sorted out with the DDOS attacks. It lands somewhere between 7 Days and Day Z and would be fun with a group too with it's PvP.

Yeah as someone who played DayZ mod a lot, I share your frustrations with the DayZSA so far, they definitely have the starvation threshold set too low for the amount of resources that spawn near the coast on a busy server, starvation unconscious death over and over is no fun trying to find a damn can opener... Going to let this one sit for a while until they tweak the loot spawn and starvation threshold.

7 days was good fun with you guys last night looking forward to more.

Will probably skip getting anything new for now, unless it goes for a good sale. Blew my budget over the Christmas sales.

I think I set up my 7 days game to allow up to 8 players. It also looks like I can increase that number on each restart. The only question I have is how it restarts...do we start back where we ended, just with our gear at the spawn spot, or restart (i hope not).

Also, it looks like 7 days got a new sale today (dammit). Its now $23.

Edit: D'oh, was a flash sale...its back to $29

If you like crafting, base building, etc. along with looting and zed in the mix, the DayZ Epoch mod is fantastic. marsvb here at SimHQ has an Epoch server up now so you are welcome to try it. Set DayZ Commander to the Epoch mod and filter for "OGERS Place" in the server list. I played on it a lot over the last 6 weeks.

The DayZ SA isn't bad, but it has a long way to go in many respects to catch up to the mod in features. There are some things to know regarding hunger/thirst. You can drink from creeks and ponds with no ill effects. When you stop to drink spam the mouse button by drinking about 10 times. Try to get off the coast as quickly as possible and find towns/villages to loot farther north. There is currently no loot respawn in the SA and the servers are set to restart every 4 hours. So it's really the luck of the draw. If you join a server that has been up for a few hours, chances are the loot will be picked over. One way to tell quickly is if the doors are already open on the buildings that you enter. Someone has been there before you. If you see a lot of that you might try to find a "fresh" server. Regarding opening cans of food, an axe or knife will do it. You don't need a can opener. With the axe you lose a percentage of the food, but you can still eat. Eat before you get hungry if possible. Some guys I was running with from SimHQ yesterday said that their character status was "healthy" when they looked at their inventory. Good luck and stay with it. It is doable and the game is improving at every update.

I don't have 7 Days or Rust. Rust looks kind of interesting. I watched one of Frankie's YouTube videos for it last night. Really funny stuff!

Thanks for that info Snakeyes, hearing about the spawn resetting only every 4 hours, that explains the majority of the problem then, since we kept trying on the same almost full server over and over and since there were no new loot spawns then we got the same results starving before finding any food.

We'll look for an empty server and not be afraid to logout and try a new server when it looks picked over, at least while we are equiping up.

Yep, getting geared up on low pop servers really helps. If you guys are playing later at night and it's hard to find a daylight server in the US (a few run daylight 24/7) try joining a server in Great Britain. The pings are still decent, most all are low pop because it is early there and the servers should be daylight when you join the game. Just enter GB in the filter for the host name and change the ping to <200. Then click the refresh button. Knowing the map is key to hooking up with your friends. I still use the DayZ DB map. It was recently updated for the SA to show where all the wells are located throughout the map. Agree on a rally point and then find a road sign near a town to get your bearings. If you don't have a compass you can get a sense of direction from the cloud flow. The clouds always move from west to east.

One of the cool things about Steam is joining on a friends game. It makes it easy for a group of friends to join the same server.

The UK servers all seem to be daylight permanently. Only a couple I've found using night and they always low population.

Interesting Mace. I just assumed they were on a 24 hour day/night cycle because I always found day light servers in the UK when I played late at night here.
