It's just their personal favorites, it's not a reflection of accuracy or anything. There are many films that have been scientifically accurate but critical and/or commercial flops. Being accurate does not a good film make alone. The Jedi Master

Without Primer or Inception on this list I refuse to believe it was made by Scientists
Everybody gets everything they want. I wanted a mission. And for my sins..they gave me one.

Alien was only number 4? That would have been my number 1 Alien had some sort of magic artificial gravity. Without Primer or Inception on this list I refuse to believe it was made by Scientists I would strongly suspect the scientists polled hadn't seen those. (Did it give a list of who was polled and what their ages were?)

Next I want to see a top 10 list of scifi movies as chosen by NBA basketball players. @PV1 - Alien also had an artificial life form.

Children of Men?
I consider that "lite SF" insofar that there wasn't a lot of "S" in it. They talk about some, but the rest is pretty much "drab dystopia". The S is in the concept in other words, not the execution. Like Gattaca. The most futuristic thing was probably the costumes and the shots of the occasional rocket launches.
As for the film itself, it was ok. It didn't impress itself upon me in particular, though.

I want spaceships, robots, aliens, future tech, locations other than Earth, or some kind of crazy mutation in my SF.

I can see Jedi's point. It's similar to how I define "fantasy". "Fantasy" to me has dragons, elves, wizards, magic, medieval-era weaponry, dwarves, etc. Unlike others I don't classify Star Wars as "fantasy".

I am a little surprised that these didn't make the list:
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Forbidden Planet (1956) The Thing (from Another World) (1951)
I think that they are better films than some of those chosen.

How did they leave off John Carpenters "The Thing"?
An awesome movie I never get tired of watching. Speaking of John Carpenter, I saw Big Trouble in Little China on one of the premium channels the other night. For being low budget, Carpenter doesn't disappoint.

I think the very core of GATTACA was science - people being genetically designed, and how those who are not are treated - so I think it easily qualifies as science fiction. I was a little surprised too, that John Carpenter's "The Thing" wasn't listed, but it's only 10 movies. Plus, of course, we don't know what scientists they asked, or how they were contacted, so it's just a vague overall list of 10 movies that a lot of scientists like. It's not like they're saying that if you're a scientist, you MUST like these 10 movies in this order
