Help my friend's friend ID this thing. "Some history, been in my family since WWII days (I believe). Always been a challenge to figure out what it is. The two rings move but there doesn't seem to be any magnification or distortion in the glass. So, anyone know what this is?"

With the other pieces missing it may not be easy to determine what it was.

Hmmm. I suppose it could be related to a recon camera housing, but I'd also expect there to be focusing of some type as opposed to plain glass.

Left out it's 8-10 inches tall and heavy.

Was only a guess arthur and not even sure if it is correct.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Doesn't look like the thing to me, maybe something inside? But if they aren't lenses, are they scored with crosshairs or anything? Is it possible that this was just a housing and a lens and cross hair arrangement was mounted inside each glass compartment, but are now removed? Further, less likely possibility: the things are designed to rotate; is the glass polarized? Will it go black at some mutual orientation?
...that's a lot of gearing. Is it set up so everything is ganged and can only move all together, or can the two sections be adjusted independently? ...no nameplates, I take it?

Some kind of automated Adis (signal lamp)? if the glasses are polerized, depending upon their position they could allow light through of stop it dead, connected to something like a keyboard that would explain the gearing Happy new year chaps.
