RIP.
People on various boards are already calling him a monster. That's unfair. He created his invention to help his country in a time of need. It was soviet policies that put them in the hands of every savage in the world. Certainly not Mikhail's fault.

Has anyone ever called Gatling or Winchester or Remington or Wesson or Colt a monster?
After all, their guns killed a lot of innocent people in the United States back in those old days.
What's in the box? C'mon, what's in the boooox?

Wish he had been on our side. He was. During WW 2 that is.

Eh...we were fighting the same enemy, but we were not friends. And that was before his chance meeting with the wrong end of the STG-44 produced the AK.

The external configuration may be similar, but they're very different mechanically. Anyway I'd imagine we're going to see the mother of all state funerals in Moscow soon.

What was the difference between the STG44 and the MP44?

What was the difference between the STG44 and the MP44? Same thing. Hitler has decreed that no new rifles would be put into production. So, they labeled the STG44 as the MP44 and it was a machinepistol (submachinegun) by declaration. The cat was only let out of the bag when the Germans fighting in Stalingrad asked for "more of those new rifles" to be delivered.

I'm sure he got hold of one of those things and went, "This thing is a pain in the butt to maintain...there's got to be an easier mechanism..."

The man was a true patriot. Can't really argue with someone who witnessed a foreign force enter his country, kill 20,000,000 people, and then did something to help prevent it from happening again.

Eh...we were fighting the same enemy, but we were not friends. And that was before his chance meeting with the wrong end of the STG-44 produced the AK. Pretty sure he was injured before the Germans were fielding automatic rifles (1941). It was only until 1943 that the Germans started issuing large numbers of semi automatic rifles. It was actually the Germans who were surprised that the Soviets had large numbers of semi automatic rifles and sub machineguns, and urged for alternative weapons to the K98K. I believe German infantry men used captured PPSH-41s more than their own MP40s.
