Hi all!
recently with my new R9 290 I tried to benchmarked it with 3dMark. As soon as the 1st test start there is a loud whine comming from the tower (Girlfriend noticed it 2 rooms from where the Pc is).
The sound came from the gpu so I put my old 6950 to see if it was the new one that was the problem. The 6950 did whine but not as loud.

So question is...
how do I know if its the MoBo or the PSU the problem?(dont have neither in spare)

Common solution is the let the GPU Run Max tilt on a Game menu that runs at Hundreds of FPS overnight.

Well, there's a good chance the whining noise from the computer would stop. But then your girlfriend would have to listen you whining instead...

I think the idea is that there is a lot of whiney noise stored in one of your cards capacitors, and if you let it run overnight it will use up all the noise in one session. After all how much noise can there be in one tiny capacitor
Seriously though, I don't know the theory behind it, but I might give this a go as my second 460 does this when frame rates are high. I run Vsync on pretty much all games though so it is rarely a problem. Empire Total War I seem to remember gives me 1000 fps plus and a S***ton of whine, just don't know how I'll get to sleep...

leaving it run overnight usually results in the coil whine fading.

can it kill an hardware piece?

well, that's the issue, temps will get pretty hot since you're loading the GPU.


I Know a lot of people used the Crysis Main Menu w/ Vsync off, Overnight for 2-3 nights, FANS set to 100%.
(or Water Cooled).

Most users said it was quiet after the first night, some users took up to 3 or 4 nights.

lol thx, OC it'll be. With about 45% it stays between 85 and 90. Might be able with 50% to crank some mhz.

XFX Doesnt Void Warranty if you remove stock Heatsink. In USA (Or N.A.?) as long as you restore it to stock form if you need to send it back to them.

So:
$30 NZXT Bracket (or cheaper Home-Made Options w/ custom brackets or Zipties).
$60 or so for Compatible AIO Water Cooler.

And some RAMSinks for the Memory, Not sure if the XFX Cards have the Heatplate over the RAM/VRM.

Yeah, I've noticed my video cards always do it when they're new, but after awhile they stop. My 570 did it and eventually stopped. My new 770 does it with certain games at certain points. Usually it's those stupid splash screens before you get to the main menu letting you know the name of the publisher, the developer, and every OEM they have a deal with that wanted their thing stuck in there.
