Gents,

For some reason I cannot activate hardware acceleration in CFS2 anymore... Happened once I went ATI vid cards back in 2010. Can someone PM me the contents of their CFS2.CFG and display.cfg files?

Thanks!

Glad that helped...CFS2 still has a lot going for it...like the sound of four Merlins on this bad boy, when you open her up and roar down the concrete at Woodhall Spa or Scampton (Just Flight 'Dambusters' Lancaster B1, about the best engine sound I've ever heard in a sim):

Hi ArgonV and 33lima,

Could you be a bit more specific about what lines need to be added--and taken away--in the various cfg files? Even since I replaced my gtx 680 with a 780 ti, I haven't been able to get CFS2 to run in anything but software mode, and it's annoying the heck out of me.

I made the three changes you list above in the cfs2.cfg file, but when I fire up the game and go to the graphic selection screen, the acceleration check box is still greyed out, and I can only choose 16 bit color/resolution combinations. The screen lists two iterations of my card--Geforce 780 TI and Gforce 780 TI (//./Display1)--but both of them only allow software mode. Are the cfg files stored anywhere but in the main folder for the game? I thought that maybe I have an old version stored somewhere else (like in the documents file or something) that was still controlling the game engine, but if so I can't find them.

Thanks in advance.

DKM

Unlike CFS3, I'm fairly sure CFS2 doesn't put files like CFS2.cfg or display.cfg outside the install folder. I have an older card (8800GT) which is listed in exactly the same way you describe in the graphics settings screen but the H/W acceleration check box is not greyed out.

Here's the first-level settings screen too, in case that helps - do you have the box 'Player defined (in advanced settings)' checked?

Maybe ArgonV can help on this one.

Thanks for the quick response, 33lima.

I think you're right about CFS2 keeping its cfg files in the main folder, and I do have the Player Defined box checked. My background screens look a little different than yours (because I'm running a stock version and it looks like you have some addons) but the dialogue box options are the same except that the Enable Hardware Accelerator Box in mine is greyed out (as well as the list of features below it) and it only allows me to select from 16 bit resolutions.

Mine version of the game worked fine until I upgraded from a 680 to the 780 Ti, after which the program evidently started failing to identify the video card as a 3D accelerator.

I've tried changing the relevant commands under the cfs2.cfg [Display] section--changing Disable=1 to Disable=0 and then deleting it altogether--and so forth, but no joy. I thought for a while I might be able to tweak the display.cfg file by adding in an entry for the 780 ti, listing the driver number, and then putting in the relevant commands from the cfs2.cfg file, but that doesn't seem to work either, perhaps because the 780 ti has so many drivers that I'm not sure which one to use.

It may also be that the problem isn't with the new card at all, but with the newest version of the Nvidia driver, which I upgraded to when I added in the new card.

In any event, thanks for the help. I'll keep tweaking and experimenting, and if I figure it out I'll pass on the information to the forum generally. CFS2 is still a really fun game, even after all these years.

And if anyone else has solved the problem, please post the solution here.

DKM

DKM,

Ah, there is a bug with CFS2 and recognizing the capabilities of our newer cards. I found out that once I set my Display Settings options in-game, then edited as I stated above in the CFS2.cfg file the proper entires, the display menu in CFS2 would still not report properly - BUT the game actually did run in hardware accelerated mode! So once you set the Display Settings options you can and make the CFS2.cfg changes just ignore what the Display Settings CFS2 menu tells you and go play the game. Just do NOT make any more changes under Display Settings otherwise what can be set there will override your CFS2.cfg entries.

You will also need to edit the resolution entry in the CFS2.cfg file to make it 32-bit instead of the 16-bit that gets set. I run at 1920x1200x32

No problem!

Very stupid issue it is... I knew I could probably override the software mode, but I didn't know what entries I needed to remove or add in the CFS2.cfg file, hence this post! biggrin

What stuff are you guys flying in CFS2 these days? A dead graphics card has helped rekindle my interest; so far I've played a bit of 'Mosquito Squadron' ( http://combatace.com/topic/81380-cfs2-revisited-mosquito-squadron/ ) and 'Dambusters' ( http://combatace.com/topic/81431-training-with-the-dambusters-cfs2-style/ ), plus a stock IJN campaign...

...and Yoshi's 'Chishima' (Kurile Islands) campaign, flying one of my favourites, the Ki43:

How about you? Or anyone else still playing, or revisiting, CFS2?

I just found my old CF1 and 2 CDs. Is there anything special that needs to be don in order to get them in to install and play in Windows 7 x64?

Don't know about CFS1 or Win 7, but CFS2 installed ok and runs fine on Vista 64 with recent Nvidia drivers, albeit on an 8800GT. You may need to do the little file edit described above on Win 7/with a newer card.

Its one of my favorite Sims. You can configurate it to your liking with the help of the CFS2 community.

Yep still fire it up every now and again. Runs great on my Win7 PHE system with an NVidia GTX 650 2Gb card.

Howdy, what is it doing for you? Have you installed the MS released patches for it?

I have it installed on a separate partition from C drive. No patches installed. Where to locate the patches? I tried to launch from the desk top icon using run as admin. No luck.

Hmmmm good question. Let me look on my hard drive when I get home.

In the meat time, try lowering your resolution on your Desktop and then launch the game.
