Buffalo Trace is a good bourbon as well. It's "wheated", like Maker's. But of the 2 you mentioned, def Maker's 46. It's very good, and seems special-er, as a gift.

I only drink beer and clear liquors.
Brown liquors are not good for you and get you drunk quicker.
What's in the box? C'mon, what's in the boooox?

Every drip is different
Every drop is the same
Wish I could have put that on the greeting card! I went with Bill Grant's advice. He's led me in the right direction quite a few times now. And most didn't involve alcohol :-)

Brown liquors are not good for you and get you drunk quicker. The darker the better! Try Captain Morgan's Black, 97.6% and pours out like thick black coffee!

Yuck, Captain Morgan Black wasn't any good (they are trying to copy the success of The Kraken). As for boubon I like Elijah Craig 12 yo.

I'm just a beer drinker, but want one of the above for a Christmas present for bro-in-law.
Which is better?
Between Maker's Mark and Maker's Mark 46... I would choose Booker's Best or Wild Turkey Rare Breed. On the other hand, if you do score some Bookers or some Rare Breed, by all means get your BIL some Makers Mark and keep the good stuff for yourself.
Question everything!
