There are several historical drama tv shows I haven't seen and I was wondering if any of you would recommend them? The ones I'm curious about are,

The Borgias
The Tudors
Boardwalk Empire
Horatio Hornblower
Sharpe

Don't bother recommending "Rome" since I already own the bluray set and have seen it several times. I'm a dyed in the wool fan. smile

Edit: I forgot to clarify that I'm only talking about recurring tv shows and not tv miniseries like Band of Brothers.

I loved "Hornblower". Great stuff.

The Sharpes movies are OK, similar to Hornblower except from a land warfare perspective. I didn't enjoy it as much as Hornblower though.

I liked the first season of Boardwalk Empire, but couldn't finish the 2nd. Lost me about halfway through.

Haven't seen the others.

I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.

I wonder what the female/male ratio is like for that show's audience?

The only one I have not seen is the Borgias. My favourite would be the Sharpe series, but all are pretty good

Vikings is good, even if 90% of the stuff in it way out in the left field with regards to accuracy.
I love Sharpe, but it is a show that is made on a shoestring budget, and it shows at times... smile
Borgias, great for a peek into the era of machiavellan intrigue at the papal house.

You said no mini-series, but I will defy you and mention two which are related and well worth watching:
Pillars of the Earth
World Without End
Both based on the books by Ken Follett, send in the early english medieval age.

The Sharpe series is excellent. The low budget does show from time to time, but it can be easily overlooked (only 30 people in that battle? We're only seeing part of it).

I have wanted to get into the Hornblower series, but have only watched the first episode.

The White Queen was 10 episodes and very good in my opinion.

You didn't mention, but are you watching Game of Thrones?

I haven't watched Game of Thrones yet but how exactly does it qualify as historical anyway? wink

From the Earth to the Moon was a great one, but it was a limited run as well.

Would Spartacus count as historical??

No, Spartacus would count as soft core porn with lots of blood.

In other words: AWESOME.
At least the first season and a half, but watch in reverse order.

How about Deadwood? I know they took some liberties, but still a great Western based on a real town and people.

I love the Borgias. My favourite TV show of the last couple of years. Irons is brilliant in it, Absolutely fantastic. As far as I'm concerned, it's the logical successor to Rome.

May I also suggest I, Claudius if you haven't seen it? One of my favourite TV shows of all time.

What else? You guys get Ripper Street over there yet? Don't know if BBC America has broadcast it. That's another great show. Just finishing it's second series here but unfortunately (and completely bizarrely) getting axed, which is a shame because the writing, the acting and the sets are all top notch. Set in Whitechappel in the aftermath of the Jack the Ripper killings. Some great - and slightly unusual - stories. I thought it was going to be a pretty average BBC costume drama when it started, but it's been anything but.

Boardwalk Empire is good as well. However, and entirely IMO, the first season is pretty dire. It was bad enough that I almost gave up on it. I'm glad I did, it really picked up in the second season and hasn't looked back since.

Russian Ark intrigues me . . . done in one take. But it is not a TV drama.

Rome is still on my short list because of Panzermeyer's recommendations. Wish I had an historic recommendation of my own, but I have been out of the TV loop for too long.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll be adding "The Borgias" and "Sharpe" to my Netflix queue for starters.

Speaking of I, Claudius, what about Cadfael?
I suppose it's mostly episodic, if you were
looking for an overarching narrative, but
fun anyway.
