Things like armoured windscreens and removed headrests and the like seem to be unlocks?
How do these get unlocked?

Am I allowed to post pics of this early access?

EDIT: looked at the user agreenement and I cannot see anything.
Plus people are posting videos.

See the bottom right of this pic

The unlocks aren't active yet. And you can post shots and videos at your leisure. There's no NDA.

"An extensive in-game achievement system that allows players to unlock historically based airplane modifications and upgrades as your campaign progresses. No Pay to Win here, only skill and bravery is needed!"

Armoured windscreens offer no advantage then...
I guess we will not know for sure what this means until the system is operational.

They should really just call them modification, not unlocks. It's basically the same system used in RoF.

The field mdos in RoF are addons you buy with real money. The unlocks in BoS are unlocks because you unlock them during gameplay, depending on the experience you gain in missions.

Unlocks have advantages - in case armored windscreen add more protection, but have disadvantages - in case add more weight to the plane, that can penalize their maneuverability. wink

I see "removed headrest." The obvious bonus is better visibility. The downside would be increased vulnerability to rear-aspect shots vis-a-vis pilot injury. Will this downside be modeled, or will it be a case of bonus only so everyone will use it when they unlock it?

It's a rhetorical question, if you think about it. Of course it will mean increased vulnerability, or there would be no reason to model it.

Not every bonus MUST come with a downside. It's not like changing skins makes your plane more fragile.

The fact that only skill and bravery is needed implies no advantage. So the armoured cockpit will just be for show wink
I actually don't think I have ever played past the first mission of any single player campaign in any sim I have played. Which is what seems to be needed for unlocks.
I always preferred LAN with customer missions or online.

I guess any new player 6 months after release cannot just join the online community without campaigning for months first to make any chosen aircraft on par with other onliners.

Anyways. I like the customisation. I just don't think a sim should have unlocks.

That is unless the unlocks are not available online?

I actually think they need to model pilot fatigue with no head rest wink

Look at what unlocks there are. None of them will give an advantage to anyone, and in fact equipping them puts most at a disadvantage. Gunpods? Unless you get lucky and jump on the first go around, you are slower, heavier and a sitting duck. Bombs? Not going to do much in a dogfight. The only thing left is an armored windscreen, which if you get shot from that angle chances are your engine is going out soon, and the headrest which is simply a better view from behind and adds no real quantifiable advantage.

If there was no downside to removing part of the seat armor, they may as well just not model that part of the armor, since everyone would just enable the mod otherwise. Modeling increased vulnerability presents the player with a challenge: do I want better visibility or better protection?

Besides that, in the context of WW2, pretty much every weapon mod did come with some sort of downside.

Nonsense. If I'm playing in career mode and that windscreen mod prevents a virtual bullet from zapping me in the head, it means I have a better chance of surviving the mission.

Luke my comment was sarcasm illustrated by the wink.
My point was that if the simulation is to be real then unlocks are an advantage. Especially one to vets who will have played the campaign when noobs enter an online server not having done so.
