Do you drive and stick to the speed limit? If the answer is no (and of course it will be) then you are breaking the law too, but that is ok? Or doesn't that matter?
I don't drive, don't steal anything, and, as far as I am aware, don't break any laws.
Edit: but that wasn't my question anyway. Do you guys that download copyrighted material illegally just download the crap stuff from the companies that force you to hand over your cash, or do you steal the good stuff from the the guys that do a good job?
Yes I agree, some of those games developers and film producers are nothing but pirates stealing our money for crappy products.
no one MAKES you buy the game, if they forced the gun to the back of your head and said "buy it!" sure, but they dont. YOU click buy, you've only got yourself to blame if you carry on buying stuff instead of waiting and seeing what the games like.
and no one MAKES you go and see the movie, YOU choose to go and watch it, they dont drag you in at gunpoint to watch it and demand payment. YOU choose to go and see it.
At the end of the day, piracy is against the law, period. No matter how you try to justify it to yourself.
Also for the record, yes i have always stuck to the speed limit, and no, speeding is not ok, the limit is there for a reason.

I have actually used torrents to get games that I have ALREADY BOUGHT, but had enough DRM in them that it makes it impossible/inconvenient for me to play as a paying customer.
That being said, I just generally stay away from games now that have that type of DRM.
Lots of other good games out there that deserve both my time and $$'s.
One thing of note though, I am torrenting (ie. stealing) Ender's Game instead of paying to see it due to my issues with the Author's views on gay rights. My form of protest, as little as it is.
I've used torrent in the past to get TV shows before they're available on blu-ray or DVD. But I don't lie to myself and say that isn't stealing when I did it.
Why do people have the urge to justify themselves and tell themselves they're being good even when they're not? It's silly.
For those of you who state that the quality of the game justifies stealing from a particular developer...do you steal burgers from McDonalds because they suck, too?
People pirate (steal) because:
1. They don't want to pay for the item. 2. It's easy. 3. The chance of being caught is almost zero.
Let's not thump our chests and say that we're entitled to steal someone else's work when we're just being jackals.
edit:
I don't consider downloading a de-DRM'd version of a game you already own to be piracy.

You're only young once, but you can be immature forever.

Just my .02
Yup, lots of games out there that use torrents as distribution. However, as you can see, it's obvious that people don't use torrent search sites to search for a game that they have purchased. The argument appears to be people feel that they can download items they haven't paid for because they feel they have some misguided entitlement.
Also you made me laugh with the excuse for downloading Ender's Game, thanks You do realise that there is more than likely at least one homophobe that has had some part in the production of every major release? Feel free to use that excuse to download every film and TV series you like.

Thanks for the honest post Shan. It really is hilarious the excuses and justifications people give.
*snip* One thing of note though, I am torrenting (ie. stealing) Ender's Game instead of paying to see it due to my issues with the Author's views on gay rights. My form of protest, as little as it is.
I have no problem with him being a homophobe (or anyone else for that matter), I have an issue with him using his position and influence to speak against basic human rights.
But....
Don't really want/need this discussion to go in that direction.
Basically, have I torrented stuff that I should have paid for, yes. I won't lie about that.
I guess my biggest 'offence' in that nature would be tv shows. I do have netflix and pay for that for shows, but have gotten other shows that either aren't on netflix (or not on netflix in my Country).
I do pay for stuff though, just not all, and I won't justify it, as it is stealing.
I am surprised though at the number of people (mostly younger), that don't buy ANYTHING if they have any option to download/torrent it.
I would hope that the consumer market would be such that if thoughts on DRM we changed (in all media), that most people would legitimately purchase content they want to consume.
Cheers!
EDIT: Just read that article, interesting. Maybe I will go see it in the theatre.
I can honestly say that I have zero pirated games on my PC. There has been the occasion in the past where I have acquired a 'demo' to check out a game I'm not sure about.
I have also bought various games after trying the 'demo' quite a few times.
Why do people have the urge to justify themselves and tell themselves they're being good even when they're not? It's silly.
Yes, it is silly, but it's also human nature. People lie to each other and to themselves all the time in order to cover up uncomfortable truths. Call it moral revisionism, if you will.
Also, file sharing is not illegal - or "as illegal" - everywhere. So if a person in Country X does it legally and a person in Country Y does it illegally, is one a thief and the other not a thief? Are we speaking to the issue of "higher morality" or merely national standards?
I enjoy the galactic discrepancy in punishment between similar misdemeanors involving copyrighted material. Sneak into the theater - get thrown out of the theater. Shoplift a DVD - pay a fine and a maybe few hours in jail. Download or copy a movie:
I have bought almost every game going (or so it feels like) and I download a game to check what a game is like if I have been burned by them before and if it's good I buy it and it's deleted, if it's bad it gets deleted. Same with films, the ones I DL I wouldn't go and see at the cinema anyway and after watching once they are deleted. I do DL the US series like Walking Dead etc but again these are deleted after watching.
BTW, if you have ever recorded from the TV - this is illegal, if you ever used to tape from the radio as a kid - this is illegal. We have all done things which are illegal that we think 'that doesn't really matter' so taking a holier than thou attitude doesn't really work in this respect.
