There I was at Angels 10, returning from a Blenheim escort mish and without even a single .303 round to scratch my arse with. Breaking through patchy cloud, I was startled to see this evil-looking jerry kite right up alongside. I quickly slid back the canopy and grabbed my on-board Agfa (which had only recently been redeemed from the local pawnbrokers) and managed to secure just one shot before he saw me and snap-rolled into the cloud. I went the other way and beat it back to Blighty at a fair old lick, I can tell you. The Intelligence bods reckon it's the new He 113 job. Dashed odd that it wasn't mentioned in the TF V.4 release notes...

That's out of Paint.Net. Helluva wing loading. High landing speed but wide track u/c. Almost nine feet less wingspan than the Hurricane. Up to 50% greater range than the Bf109E. Imagine the roll rate. 416MPH...allegedly. Supreme defender of the Heinkel factory at Marienehe Quantity production would have changed history from the 'close run thing' to complete air supremacy for the Luftflotte chaps, IMHO. Was this a Messerschmitt favoured, political 'own goal' which disadvantaged the Luftwaffe? Yes.

PV1, That's correct. Using a Cliffs screenie, I layered a shrunk and trimmed image of the He100 (model aircraft) onto it. There's rather more to Paint.Net than the usual basic Paint but certainly not as much as Gimp, Paintshop Pro etc. A handy thing though. Maybe some enterprising chap could do similar with another 'what might have been' job: The FW187 Falke. That aircraft with DB601s alongside the 100D would have ruled the skies in the speed stakes over SE England during the Battle of Britain. The RLM contributed a war-losing move when they decided that Messerschmitts alone would be all they needed to carry Germany to victory in that blitzkrieg year.

Problem with the HE-100 design was IIRC they used the whole wings as coolers, so a very large target area. A few rounds into the wings and the coolant goes bye-bye. Not a nice option, when fighting over the channel.
edit: but a great screenie!

Indeed, Paint.NET has almost everything you need and most other things can be added with plug ins. Makes it less cluttered, less of a hunt for the thing you are looking for.

edit: but a great screenie! The last incarnation of the He 100, the D1 reverted to conventional cooling and so would have been a bit tougher in combat. From Wikipedia: "He 100 D-1 The final evolution of the short He 100 history is the D-1 model. As the name suggests, the design was supposed to be very similar to the pre-production D-0s, the main planned change being to enlarge the horizontal stabilizer. But the big change was the eventual abandonment of the surface cooling system, which proved to be too complex and failure-prone. Instead an even larger version of the retractable radiator was installed, and this appeared to completely cure the problems. The radiator was inserted in a "plug" below the cockpit, and as a result the wings were widened slightly. While the aircraft didn't match its design goal of 700 km/h (430 mph) once it was loaded down with weapons, the larger canopy and the radiator, it was still capable of speeds in the 644 km/h (400 mph) range. A low drag airframe is good for both speed and range, and as a result the He 100 had a combat range between 900 to 1,000 km (560 to 620 mi) compared to the Bf 109's 600 km (370 mi). While not in the same league as the later escort fighters, this was at the time a superb range and might have offset the need for the Bf 110 to some degree. Finally, there were allegations that politics played a role in killing the He 100. By this point, the war was underway, and as the Luftwaffe would not purchase the aircraft in its current form, the production line was shut down. The remaining 12 He 100 D-1 fighters were used to form Heinkel's Marienehe factory defense unit, flown by factory test pilots. They replaced the earlier He 112s that were used for the same purpose, and the 112s were later sold off. At this early stage in the war, there were no bombers venturing that far into Germany, and it appears that the unit never saw action. The eventual fate of the D-1s remains unknown. The aircraft were also put to an interesting propaganda/disinformation role, as the supposed Heinkel He 113." RedToo.

It seems there just weren't enough DB601s to go round, like the FW190 if the He100 had used a different engine it would have been put into production. Engine supply or development troubles put paid to some sexy designs, the Westland Whirlwind and its RR Peregrines, the He117 and its DB 606s the Martin Maker MB5 and the contra prop WW2 RR Griffon. There are others. I find these what if discussions fascinating

The deception certainly was very successful for the Luftwaffe. There are no records of the airplane ever having seen combat, yet it shows up in many Allied AAR's. Both fighter pilots and bomber crews reported meeting the airplane in combat. Good picture.
