Hey guys, I know we had talked about playing some arma soonish. This afternoon/Evening, Brennus and I are planning to get some Arma 3 in and any and all are welcome to join.

As an FYI there is also going to be the Iron Front Saturday taking place on the SimHQ server starting at 3PM Central, that will go for a couple of hours, and then afterwards there will more than likely be a group sticking around for some arma 3.

I intend to join up with the iron front group and then afterwards switch over to arma. Again, any/all are welcome, its always a good time smile

I may be on later tonight, but tomorrow night should work for me.

Is this something the MWO guys are interested in doing on the weekends?

I started up the campaign last night to get used to the controls again, has been a while.

smile

Is the plan to meet up on the MWO channel, or just watch for people you know up in the Arma channel?

Probably not going to be on today or tonight. We've been doing the soccer thing since this morning. Now wifey and I are making a run for it and the night will end with me with a beer in my hand on a porch somewhere.

I've also just started the ArmA 3 campaign and am really getting into it. I'll be online this evening for either MWO or ArmA 3 or multiplayer Solitaire.

Indeed! That was tons of fun, I'm planning on being there for serious sunday and/or domination afterwards today. Messing around with the mission this morning found some fun stuff that would have been good to know last night.

hold "u" down and it brings up the domination command menu. you can use it to change your view distance, switch groups between players if needed, change grass settings, and review side missions and the main area side mission (there was another one that is not marked the we needed to complete)

It also has an artillery interface that anybody can use to drop artillery without the arty vehicles, but there is like a 5 minute wait between strikes.

You can also call in an air dropped ammo box or hunter, which parachutes in where you need it, takes a couple of minutes though, and you can call an air taxi, an AI ghosthawk that will fly you back to the base.

also at the register next to the ammo box back at the base, you can recruit an AI team to go with you if you want to increase our presence on the ground, upto 4 per player I think.

You will not find me on serious Sunday. I have a feeling that it is dominated by the same guys who forced me to use push to talk for a month. I am just not that serious.

Why so serious.

Not wanting to hear everyone's breathing and speaking to their family in the background has nothing to do with the ARMA nights, push to talk is required by most people not wanting to hear that.

I think voice activated allowed works well for us on the MWO channel because there's a bunch of us who are on regularly and make sure we don't have background noise ourselves and we call it out if someone has it going on... that might not work so well on some of the other channels that have less regular participation or people willing to call it if it's happening biggrin

But I'm guessing that was said in jest more as a worry that most of us who play MWO regularly and might try joining the Arma3 SimHQ games, are not hardcore enough to fit into the SimHQ "Serious" play sessions, either because we are too new or because we aren't following strict military protocol or radio discipline...

Hopefully the worry is for naught and Arma3 will be a good diversion for us regular MWO players.

Yup, there's nothing for you guys to worry about John, there's nothing serious about serious Sunday at all (it just rhymed with Sunday I think wink

There's definitely no strict military protocol or radio discipline except for not talking about what you had for dinner while in the middle of an engagement or when close to the enemy, which I'm sure you guys do also smile

Some fun last night. Four of us were on playing domination, Kludger, Raw, Feetwet and myself.

I found having the ShackTac Hud running was really nice for situational awareness of friendlies, and quick access to rough compass direction, recommend that for everyone.

I thought we actually started doing pretty well after we got going.

Going to have to tweak my G13 a bit for the new stances, it was a bit clunky for me, also don't have anything mapped for the alternate sight mode.

Finally, a good tutorial on the inventory system (btw, Jester814 is a great resource to learn anything Arma related)

Good times last night, it was late so I'm glad you guys were still going. Sorry I couldn't get on earlier. Really enjoyed it, it's just learning the controls that's a PITA. That plus having forgotten how I set up my G13 compounded the problem. I actually think I have MORE mapped than I really need, so I should be able to redo this and keep up a little better. For now I'll stick with mapping infantry to get used to it, then add vehicles/aircraft later.
I'll try to remember TIR too, might as well use it.

FPS was around 18-24, with some frequent dips into the teens. The autodetect puts settings on ultra, but even dropping draw distances and other settings, it doesn't seem to change much.

Anyone know how to get DayZ going again on Arma2? I tried running the six updater but no luck. The forum for it is getting outdated, and I don't know what these different packages are. Last I ran it, it was just one island/area, it seems there's more now.
Any of you guys running this?

Ran both of those launcher/updaters. Ran both A2 games, which I know I forgot to do before, and I've done a clean install since last time I played it. It should run.
I can't find that server for anything, but I'll try hopping in there later on tonight or tomorrow to see what they've done with it. I like the idea of a PvE only server.

Was looking around for some performance tweaking guides.

This one seems pretty good: http://segmentnext.com/2013/09/16/arma-3-tweaks-guide-graphics-and-performance/

Will see if it smooths things out online.

I also spent some time tweaking my control setup last night before hopping into some MWO with Kludger.

I will post my G13 settings when I have a chance, I would like to see what others are doing with the setup as well.

Cheers!

Going through that, I wish they had included the visibility settings.
Also Post process AA, I just set to off.

On the config file, it's odd because they say:
Quote:
GPU_MaxFramesAhead=4
The value can change from 1 to 4.
Experiment with the values to find what suits you best, starting off from 4 and going down if you experience issues.

...but what I have in there by default is
GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1000;

1000 is far from 4! I'm a little worried there's a typeo. I backed this, up, so I'll just give it a shot starting at 4.

Found another guide here with recommended view distance: http://www.realitygamer.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=186&Itemid=217

Overall Visibility: Use about 2500 for Standard or 1600 as a Low setting.*
Object Visibility: Use about 1500 for Standard 1100 as a Low setting.*
Shadow Visibility: Leave at 100 or lower.

Here's my A3 G13 layout, it doesn't present the entire control scheme however, as many of the buttons have double click functions, such as Step Over which is assigned to 2x G3 for example. In addition to the G13, I've programmed most of the weapon controls to my G5 mouse, but I'll save that for later...

Also, saw a dayz arma3 video tonight. It was a pretty early build though.

barring something disastrous happening (unannounced late sim or some such) I should be good all night tonight for some arma 3 nonsense

Aside from a few incidents, like mine explosions and the mysterious destruction of our surplus helos, I had a good time last night. Slowly getting used to the control scheme.
However that fps issue is making me sick! Once that dropped it's like being tensed up the whole time due to frustration and not having smooth movement. Couldn't hit much of ANYTHING not just a few feet in front of me either.
I'll probably sit out until I get the pc updated again to run this better. After running 60-70 fps in the campaign and a test in MP earlier yesterday, it was pretty damn aggravating playing this thing at 18 fps 20 minutes into it. Maybe they'll get it patched to run better in online MP.

The mines were a funny and frustrating diversion. I had a lot of fun last night. My frame rates didn't drop til we went after the second town. I'm wondering if it is just all the stuff that is going on on the map. Don't know.

I did see someone running around our choppers last night. I thought it was a friendly but maybe some random saboteur was out and about...

Yeah fun last night, and the framerate was lower for me on that second town too, when using sniper scope framerate sucked... more than it should on my higher end machine.

I think I probably need to tweak the visibility distance settings or something.

PS. still pretty frustrated that the interior walls and doors still stick to you when you try to move through them, especially prone... annoying longterm problem with the Arma series that I hoped they would have fixed with Arma3, lucky it didn't break my legs trying to low crawl through the door threshold like it does in DayZ but almost as bad since you're stuck while AI is shooting at you.

Oh yeah, that's definitely what happened to them. Spies. Had to be. Nothing else would explain it.
I wasn't there when it didn't happen.

Had fun last night as well.

We could try some of the other missions if you want, just to see if there is a difference in frame rates or not.

Also, kludger, I saw you stuck in the doorway once, when you were prone. You head and shoulders were through the doorway, but you body was hitting the doorway, so it was 'blocking' you, maybe the issue is when you are prone more so?

Wondering how many casualties we had from mines vs. the enemy on the first town. wink

100 years from now they'll still be unearthing mines in that poor town.

Princess Diana would die of a heart attack, and then revived on the way to the hospital only to die again in a horrible car accident totally not the fault of the French news media...

Too soon?
