So with the latest double digit price rises timed RIGHT before winter strikes (and its likely to be another very cold winter) Im just wondering how many of you have actually looked at the cost of your energy here in the UK and how many of you will actually change to somewhere else?

I was with nPower, being charged 11.56p a kilowat for electricity and 3.842p for gas BUT the real killer is the standing charge at £230 a year!

I shopped around and it was actually impossible to find anything anywhere near what I was paying on all the fixes and variable rates. The best I could do was with EDF Blue + Price Promise March 2015 at 12.16p for electricity and 3.727p for gas with £164 a year standing charge!

Ok, First and Select did come out cheaper by about £50 a year BUT they are both nearly universally panned for their near non-existant customer services and penchant for getting bills wrong!

Anyway, what are you guys paying and if you arent looking around...why not???

I'm not looking around because I don't think I will get anything cheaper.

I am with EON on a duel-fuel tariff. That costs me £29 a month for gas and electricity.
As for water,I am on a meter and that is £11 per month.

It was £26/£7.99 a month until about 6 months back,I must be getting wasteful biggrin

This thread should be interesting!

I don't recall what I'm charged per kilowatt but my monthly electricity bill is usually around $80 USD. I have a one bedroom apartment though so that explains the low price. In the US, electricity prices vary wildly from State to State. California has one of the highest rates while Florida which is where I live is roughly in the middle of the pack. Oh and I don't have gas.

I actually just got my bill when I got home after work, so I'll give full details.

I'm with SSE for both electricity and gas:
Electricity: Domestic Standard tariff
12.12p/kWh
26.1p standing charge

Gas: General Saver tariff
4.02p/kWh
26.1p standing charge

Total is just shy of £70 for two months.

I don't really feel the cold so the central heating almost never goes on.If I do get cold I just put more clothes on.
As for the water,I just don't waste it.Always take a shower,never a bath.Having no garden helps.

I have a 1 bedroom 1st floor flat by the way. Before this I had a 3 bed detached bungalow with economy 7 heating. It cost a small fortune to run that place.Never again (unless I win the lottery of course) yep

Lately I've been thinking if the energy companies can't provide electricity and gas to Britons' homes without charging them crippling bills that rise way faster than the rate of inflation - then there is a pretty good case to re-nationalise these companies.

About 14 cents a kilowatt on a monthly fixed balance billing

For comparison...

Electricity
Fixed: €23.52/Month, Day: €0.2364/kWh Night: €0.2124/kWh

Gas:
€16.67/Month, €0.6538/m^3

The house uses 43€ for electricity and €160 for gas. That's about £36 and £136 a month. If I didn't have solar on the roof, the electricity would be about €29 more.

We don't have gas.

Everything electric in this house including the water heater and central heating and stove top and oven.

One good thing about living in Quebec is the ridiculously low cost provided by our government-run/owned electric utility, Hydro-Quebec. I think we have the lowest rates on the continent. I think it's about .06 per KWH. Our bill for the last two-months was $122. We're on a plan so it's pretty much the same all year round, and we heat with electricity.

Private industry has been screaming for years to have Quebec hydro power privatized, they say our rates are far too low. (Yeah, great tactic, les boys, by all means keep that one up.) So any Quebec government/political party who sells Hydro-Quebec to a private concern will be forever blamed for skyrocketing hydro rates and will never win an election again. Besides, the government is more than happy to rake in the billions in profit they make every year already off hydro.

We have lots of complaints about lots of things here, but the cost of electricity isn't one of them.

Question everything!

I'm looking at £2100.00 a year for combined gas and electricity, the big culprit is gas as it's used a lot for cooking on a big hob (we're big into food and cooking). I switch every year to the cheapest, avoiding First etc. as they are well dodgy.

Zero.
We have a 5.2 kW solar panel system on the roof. If we didn't though, we'd be paying Aus$0.22 per kW/h.

Close, but the lowest rates are from a municipally owned utility in a small town in Washington state,
that own their own hydro dam long ago paid for. They charge $.02US/kW. It was being considered
for a big deep underground dark matter detector lab a few years ago, in part because of the cheap power.
Don't remember the name.

We pay $.07 in BC for the same reason, with BC Hydro. My bimonthly rates go
down around $40 in the summer and hit $200 in winter. I could have them evened
out, but leaving them unadjusted helps get my attention if things get excessive.
I also have electric heat, in a rowhouse condo, so I get two sides well insulated
by the neighbours.

EON dual fuel, four bed modern detached, works out around £1600 year. Mind you, with two kids and modern tech, we use alot of leccy. If I'm cold, the gas central heating goes on.
