Apologies for going off-topic, but anyone know if these nvidia discounts are effective in the UK yet? Overclockers have an MSI GTX 770 for £250 which is very tempting.

Had over 2.5 years solid service from my 580 so this would be a significant upgrade. Bearing in mind how long I've had that, I'm wondering if I can justify the extra £100 (min) for a 780.

Edit: Actually looks more like £150 difference between 770 and 780. Even harder to justify.

Ooops.

Just pulled the trigger on an EVGA GTX 780 Superclocked ACX. Rather a lot of money, but comes with at least double the performance of my 580 and will run everything on max settings for the time being at least.

Going even further off topic, I find it amazing that this is the first significant upgrade I've made to a PC I built in Jan '11. There's still no sign that the venerable i7 2600k will be the limiting factor any time soon, and I'm not even overclocking it.

As you were...

Nice card.

Yeah the i5-2500k, i7-2600k were serious bang for the buck, mine's been running like a champ overclocked for going on 3 years and I've bought 2 video cards since then but the CPU doesn't look like it will need upgrading for another couple of years, especially now that everything will base performance on AMD's PS4/X1 console spec that we already beat.

The launch of the R9 290 has been pushed back a week. AMD supposedly made such big improvements to their drivers that they are giving to the reviewers another whole week to retest the cards with them. The rumor says that 290 beats the 780 and its close to Titan with them, which also does make the 290x make like a bad choice right now.

The Benches I've seen from Non Bias Sites have the 290x beating the 780 Easily and trading blows with the Titan at Multi Screen and 4K Resolutions.

at 1080p, it's pointless, 780, Titan and 290X all exceed minimal FPS at the high settings.

The R9-290 is just a hair slower, so it should beat the 780 and match/trade blows with the 780ti and titan.

It's pointless, unless you're playing on a 3d 120hz monitor.

Yeah, I'm not too happy with my 6950 even after getting a 6970 for crossfire. With nvidia cards, I always felt I got more bang for the buck than every time I go AMD/ATI. Even going off of the Toms hierarchy chart and prices before the drop I think something lower on the chart but nvidia might be better for my next card. Getting a GTX770 for $300 sounds like the ticket. Plus that beta video cap software is apparently excellent (for beta) and you can keep the last 10 minutes of video that's in the buffer. Kludger says less fps hit than fraps or dxtory, and the video quality even on medium is excellent.

Shadowplay is Very good for a beta, it uses a some of the GPU to record, but it does it VERY well,

Aside from some Codec Issues, It's definitely better than FRAPS and DXTORY.

AMD has plans in place to introduce their OpenCL Version of a Live recorder.

There's a lot being written about the temperature and subsequent noise of the 290X. Reviews suggesting that 'quiet mode' (max 40% fan speed) is necessary for acceptable noise levels, which knocks about 15% off the speed it runs at and results in almost identical performance to a 780.

PC Gamer review
bit-tech article

It'd at least be worth waiting to see if non-reference coolers improve the situation.

On the other hand, if you don't mind the noise you can overclock a 780 and get the same performance as a stock 290X smile

And with Mantle, there should be >10% improvement. Allegedly of course, because someone said they wouldn't have gone public with the Mantle announcement, if the improvement was just a single digit percentage.

Brun mate,
Scan are now selling the Zotac GTX 780 for £350, almost a billy bargain, can you cancel you order?

Saw your PM yesterday, only just had chance to reply. My 780 was delivered on Fri and installed over the weekend so I missed out on the Zotac one which by the looks of it is no longer available.

Delighted with the EVGA one though, runs BF4 at 2560x1440, ultra settings and barely below 80fps. As a bonus, it's also significantly quieter than the 580 it replaced. Pretty amazing all round.

I see at Fudzilla and Anandtech the basic R9-290 (without the X) at $400 (at Newegg) is really good bang for buck. However the reference design is loud. So, many non-reference cards are expected.

Quote:
The $399 R9 290 outperforms Nvidia’s GTX 780, a card which launched at $649 and just last week it got a $150 price cut – which still leaves it $100 more expensive than the new Hawaii Pro card. The GTX 770 used to sell for $399, but it got a $70 price cut and it’s now $329, but the R9 290 will wipe the floor with it without breaking a sweat. In fact, in some games it even humiliates the $999 Titan, which is mind boggling.

The downside? It’s loud, very loud...

As far as I understand it, the 290s are loud not because AMDs reference cooler is bad, but simply because it has a hell of a lot of heat to deal with. It's noteable that they've gone the route of blowing the air out the back of the card, presumably to mitigate the effects of all that heat on the rest of the system. You obviously wouldn't want it inside your case where it will almost certainly affect CPU temperature.

Given that third parties will have to deal with the exact same thermal issues I'm not sure that people's expectations for non-reference air cooling will be met.
