The way I see it, the card is always supposed to run at 95C, on full load. That means that whatever cooling you use, it will always clock up to get to that temperature. Or at least that's what I think.

I thought about one of those corsair hyrdro coolers too.

Btw, interesting discussion about the 290 that will be revealed next week at overclockers.co.uk, someone posted about a flashed 290 with 290x bios, watercooled and faster than the Titan.

For CrossfireX configurations, in my experience it is the best sort of cooliong. Also doesn't allow venting of hot air back into your case nearly as much...

He flashed the BIOS to get higher voltage controls, no extra shaders.

Like i said, EK has 1200/1600 Samples with no voltage adjustments.

AFAIK, looking at benches and charts, when you hit 95^C, it will throttle the GPU.

I'd Rather Pump the Fan up to 100% and let it go at 100% the whole time Im Gaming.

There's no point in letting it sit at 30% and let the heat build up, then spool up to 40/55%, by then the heat is already out of control, and it will throttle.

I also wont hear it over my headphones anyway.

No review yet has benches with the Fan at 100% or water block attached.

R9-290 has the same Memory Controller just a bit handicapped, but i've already seen them running 1250 to 1300 MHz, which spanks the titan, and matches out of the box R9-290X Cards.

Since they are all reference, you can buy any brand and flash the ASUS 290X Bios on to it to get better voltage control.

very small sample with 100% here:

I can't remember the last time I've seen a watercooled card reviewed by one of the big sites.

I should also update my comment to say:

R9-290X Beats the titan easily, in 4K Resolutions.

at 1080p, and other lower resolutions, it's pretty much hit and miss.

Prolly cuz AMD Tuned the drivers for Eyefinity and 4K

$550 for a GTX Titan-dethroning card? I sense imminent price cuts!

I wonder how well GTX 800/Maxwell will compare performance-wise. NVIDIA has to pull out all the stops now if they want to reclaim the performance crown.

As for the R9 290's temperatures, holy crap, it's GTX 480/Fermi all over again. The instant I got my reference GTX 480 and saw the load temps spike to 95 degrees even with the fan in flat-out Dustbuster mode, I knew it had to be waterblocked. Looks like it's the same deal with the R9 290.

Can I have an estimate which card would make sense with an AMD Phenom II X6 1090; would a 280x (or 290 xon-x) be significantly bottlenecked by the CPU in 1920x1080? Generally more interested in low-ish noise than 3% extra fps.

Titan and 780 / 780Ti will not see price drops due to their origins.
GK110 is A Pro Series GPU, nVidia had a HUGE overstock of these chips due to Pro GFX Boards not selling,
So they took their $3000 Pro Card, Removed the ECC VRAM From it, Disabled some stuff, and Modified the BIOS to get the Titan.
They are already selling them for a loss, but it's better than those chips sitting in a warehouse making no money.

IMHO, It's getting to the point where High End GPU's Need to either ship w/ no Cooling attached (to allow user to purchase their own water block), or with a Closed Loops Water System. GPU's Use 2-3x the Power and put out 2-3x the heat of some of the mid-high range CPUs now.

A Single 290X/290 wont be bottlenecked by a PhenomII x6

You could decide by fixing on a budget and deducting a silent after market cooler, like the Prolimatech MK-26.

I stand corrected,

nVidia just put out Price cuts for 780, 770, and 780TI Pricing.

780 is down to $499, 780Ti will be 699, 770 down to 329 on October 29th.

770/780/780Ti will Get you 3 Games + 100 off a nVidia Shield
760/660 will get you 2 games + 50 off shield.

Titan itself will be untouched,
nVidia says 780Ti has Titan-Like Performance.

I'm torn between a GTX 770 or a ATI 7970, currently got a 6950 and want something with a bit more oooomph. Can't really justify a 780 just for Clod.

Over this side of the pond, they seem to be around the same price (following NVIDIAs price cut) I've had AMD cards seems almost forever, so thoughts turned to the GTX, especially with AC and Splinter cell etc. I game at 1920x1200.

A single HD7970 can realistically run 3 monitors in Eyefinity (at 5760x1200). I did that for quite a while (then added another for the fun of it).

For 1920x1200, lots of mid to high end cards work well enough that one cannot "see" the difference -- only "measure" it. So, an HD7970, for example, leaves a lot of room for future "growth". Also, console games (on the new consoles) will be optimized for AMD shaders (like the ones in HD7970) because that's what's in the the PS4 and XBox One (nVidia did not make it into the new consoles).

As an AMD fan, I don't follow nVidia closely enough to accurately compare the 770 specifically with the HD7970. But, though not a fan of nVidia business practices, I do think they also make great graphics cards.

Sapphire Pulse RX7900XTX, 3 monitors = 23P (1080p) + SAMSUNG 32" Odyssey Neo G7 1000R curve (4K/2160p) + 23P (1080p), AMD R9-7950X (ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 420), 64GB RAM@6.0GHz, Gigabyte X670E AORUS MASTER MB, (4x M.2 SSD + 2xSSD + 2xHD) = ~52TB storage, EVGA 1600W PSU, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Full Tower, ASUS RT-AX89X 6000Mbps WiFi router, VKB Gladiator WW2 Stick, Pedals, G.Skill RGB KB, AORUS Thunder M7 Mouse, W11 Pro

ie in the reviews for 290X, they said it was pointless to run them (R9-290x and Titan/780/780Ti) at 1080p, as they all ran pretty much every game at Ultra w/ ease at 100+ FPS. (ArmA III and a few others being the exception).

GTX770 is a Rebadged 680, which traded blows with the 7970.

I Run 3 Screens on a Overclocked 7950, but I will upgrade to a Aftermarket 290X during my Tax Return Rebuild.
