Hi Ssnake (and company),
I bought Steel Beasts Professional PE back in the day but haven't used it in years (it's a great program but I just ran out of time for a while). But I recently built a new rig and tried to install SB PE tonight. I downloaded the most current CodeMeter runtime system (as per the instructions at the Steelbeasts.com forum), installed the runtime program, plugged in the doggle, and tried to upgrade the doggle's firmware from 1.18 to 2.02 (also as per the instructions at the SB forum). The firmware upgrade program ran for a couple of minutes and reported that the doggle's firmware had been upgraded properly, but the Version number for the doggle listed in the Control Center remained the same: 1.18. I assumed that was a problem, but when I attempted to reflash the doggle, the software said it was up to date.
The doggle itself shows up in the CodeMeter Control Center, and its status is Enabled in the Status category.
So I figured I was good to go in terms of the doggle. Unfortunately, whenever I try to run Steel Beasts PE (at this point I'm running the version that came on the install CD), I get a "CodeMeter or WIBU-KEY runtime system is not installed" message, even though the CodeMeter Control Center is up and running and "CmStick" and a serial number for the stick are showing up in the License section of the Codemeter Control Center display.
Obviously I'm doing something wrong, but it's been so long since I last worked with the program that I can't figure out what to do differently. (One of the things that puzzles me is that in various screenshots of the CodeMeter Control Center posted in the SB forum, the License section in the screen shots shows both a CmStick entry and an Esims program entry, but my Control Center only has one entry under the license section, the CmStick itself).
Any suggestions on what I should do differently with the doggle, so that it interacts with the SB PE program properly, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
DKM
P.S. My system is a Windows 7 64 bit system.

Old CM sticks with a serial code 1-xxxxxxx will get the firmware 1.18, newer sticks with serial code 2-xxxxxxx will be upgraded to firmware 2.02. To that extent everything is fine. I'm not quite sure what to make of your description, to be honest. Questions: - Are you trying to run your old copy of SB Pro PE, or have you downloaded and installed version 3.0?
- If version 3.0, have you purchased a license upgrade for your stick?
- If you purchased one, have you applied it?
(In other words, have you activated the ticket?) - Is the CodeMeter service running?
In the CodeMeter Control Center, the menu next to "File" ("Action"? I only have the German version here...) the last two entries will control this setting (starting, and stopping the CodeMeter runtime software as a service)

Thanks for the quick responses, Ssnake.
I tried to contact you using the PM function, but the UBB prompt said you aren't presently accepting private messages, and I don't know your email address, so I'll reply here in the hope that you get my response ok.
In answer to your questions,
1. I initially went with the very early version of SB Professional PE included on the CD that came out when the game was first released (I had purchased it within a week or so of its release). Since that early version won't run--except to tell me that the CodeMeter runtime system is not installed--I don't know what the exact release number of it is, but the time stamp for the exe is something like March of 2007.
2. When the early version wouldn't run, I attempted to upgrade it sequentially, following the order implied in the list of upgrades on the esim website. That didn't work because the early upgrades wouldn't install (as far as I can tell part of the install program for the upgrades included a CodeMeter runtime system check, and when that failed, the upgrade install aborted), and when I tried the later upgrades they wouldn't install because they required earlier upgrades to build on.
3. Then, for whatever reason, I struck it rich. The funky beta version which installs alongside the earlier version rather than as a replacement for it, version 2_370 beta, worked. Yay!!!! It recognized the doggle, started, and ran just fine. And still runs just fine.
4. But--and this is the pit--none of the subsequent versions work. The error message they give me is a little different than the earlier error messages were--the later versions recognize the presence of the CodeMeter system but say, in effect, that the doggle must not be plugged in properly--but the end result is the same: I can't run the program. I've switched the doggle to different USB ports, wiggled it around, and so forth, etc, and it doesn't make any difference. I still get the same error message.
So in the last day or so I've made progress but am still not there yet. Just to to recap:
1. I'm running version 5.00.1 of the CodeMeter runtime program, and it seems to be working. When I plug in the doggle, the software recognizes it.
2. The license dialogue box of the CodeMeter runtime program shows that the doggle is present and active. And when I click the View part of the runtime program and ask it to list the available license entries, it lists esim as one of the entries.
3. An early beta version of SB Pro PE recognizes the doggle and starts up just fine. None of the other versions I've been able to install do (I have not installed 3.0 because I haven't bought it yet, however).
I'm not sure what else to tell you or send you, but as a start I'll cut and paste the text listed in the Events dialogue box (I've x-ed out part of the serial number in the cut-and-paste because it seems strange to post that on an open forum like this, but after I get your email address I can email it to you):

The good news is that I can now run one specific version of Steel Beasts Pro PE: the 2_370 beta version. The bad new is that I can't seem to figure out how to run any of the subsequent versions, which makes me worry that if I purchase the new 3.0 upgrade (which is what I'd hoped to do), I'm not sure I'll be able to get it to run.
Anyway, I appreciate your help in trying to get this up and running. I've long admired both Steel Beasts--which is one of the most serious simulations of tank warfare I've ever seen--and your willingness to support folks like me, who can't seem to get it running properly.

I tried to contact you using the PM function, but the UBB prompt said you aren't presently accepting private messages, and I don't know your email address, Bah. I'm working @ esimgames.com, so try my forum name here, or Comments, or Sales, or use the contact form sheet at the eSimGames.com homepage. It'll reach me. 1. I initially went with the very early version of SB Professional PE included on the CD ... that early version won't run That's odd, although I suspect that we could somehow get it to work. 3. version 2_370 beta, worked. At least it shows that the CodeMeter stick & runtime software work, basically. 4. But--and this is the pit--none of the subsequent versions work. If you are referring to version 2.5 and 2.6, that's supposed to be so because you didn't purchase the licenses for it. CodeMeter is working as designed, although I concede that the error messages is worded in a misleading way. In summary, I think that you just need to buy an upgrade license for version 3.0, apply it to the stick, and you should be able to run the new Steel Beasts version just fine.
