It was Edith who said "Tarzan and his loin cloth" when mentioning a famous duo on All in the Family.

Heckle and Jeckle

Pixie and Dixie

Chip and Dale

Fred and Barney

Hawkeye and Hunnicutt or Trapper. Take your pick.

Stone and Keller (Streets of San Francisco - though I had to look up Douglas' character)

Dobie Gillis and Maynard Crebbs

Wally and Beaver

Sanford and Son

Hey, give me a break. All the good ones have been mentioned already.

I'm going to go with:

"Try and list TV shows that survived WITHOUT a duo."

Your list will be shorter and easier.

Moonlighting had Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis, but the show would've sucked with just one of them. Add a 3rd to the mix and it almost never works.

In fact, TOS is one where it did. Kirk and Spock and McCoy. Kirk and McCoy and McCoy and Spock were just as important as Kirk and Spock. But that's a rarity.

Likewise a single lead and nothing but supporting characters elsewhere makes an ok film, but not TV. Now one lead can be more famous, or have a larger role, but still there needs to be a clear 2nd to them.
