Big announcements from AMD today. Other than the audio on the graphic cards, the biggest one is the low level API they're designing along with DICE/EA. It will be cross-platform and it will bypass DirectX whenever it detects an AMD card (don't know if it will work with older cards). Huge news, as that means that DICE/EA's games will be using it on consoles and on the PC, making porting games much easier, and having performance advantages, if you have an AMD card.

Wow, we are going back to the days of proprietary render engines!

Might be great for portability but I think the bypass DirectX feature could be a drag as well, if the PC version of the engine is now stuck using the same console graphics drivers meant for console spec GPUs, which will be frozen in time for the next 7 years, in the meantime PC GPUs will be an evolution ahead each year or two.

It seems like AMD and DICE are betting the farm on consoles.
