Very cool, optical illusions are very revealing.

The human eye, while highly evolved, is still a very crude sensor for collecting data. It's only because of the amazing interpretive powers of the brain that we can use them to the degree we do... but this demonstrates how easy it is to skew the input to the brain and compute a completely different and unexpected ( grotesque? ) result.

I also think it has larger implications. Say a violent crime happens within our peripheral vision and many people reporting the crime describe different subjects.
