It sounds quite similar to SC, Elite was the original space trading/dogfighting space sim which originally came out on the BBC Micro way back in the early 80s.

Elite: Dangerous is the latest incarnation of that, I don't think it will be as much sandbox as SC will be but I think it will be close.

The universe in E: D will be proceeduarly <sp?> generated and not hand crafted like SC. Still all in all it looks good and should be here next year.

The good thing is that it's modular, if you know you're not interested in planetary landing or FPS action you don't have to buy the related module.
I for one, have pledged enough to get the Full version, with all the Modules included (when they'll be released, that is). An Elite game without planetary landings if inconceivable, for me.

biggrin

Any idea how many modules there's going to be. Cos I was thinking of the 30 GBP full game but there's an 80 GBP option which includes "all expansions". Figuring this means the modules? Or are they full on expansions?

It's actually hard to REALLY tell how many.
For sure there's going to be:

- a First Person exploration mode (both own ships -as in exploration, damage control, secondary stations/turrets and also space stations markets/bar/and so on, other ships -as in boarding actions! and it seems big game hunting...)

- Planetary landing, no cutscenes, no gates- a seamless integration of planets atmosphere and surface WITH different -of course- types of planets (gas giants, rocky, tropical, and on and on...)...

- Extra ships produced in time (apparently to simulate progress in manifacturing and such)

- ??? Single-ish player campaign for Military ??? a wild guess but a possible one...

Unknown the price and the release dates, of course.
But I pledged for that 80GBP Digital Download pack.

Been into Elite since I was... uhh... 12 I guess.

This is THE GAME I was waiting for.
Forever.

SC to me is fine, but... there's something... that's giving me a bad vibe.
All in all it looks like SC is (pardon the term ) wh*ring out.
Everything- EVERYTHING- is shown naked and bluntly as E: D is taking it's time but giving me an oveall different impression.

It shown very little, but when it does (to me) is of a cataclysmic effect.

SC Shown too much too soon and keep on doing that, its design is too *apparently* flat.

I don't- CAN'T- understand how Elite is less of a sand box... it has literally BILLIONS of systems and while Procedurally generated that doesn't mean just "random". The engine is being given a very precise set of rules (it's all in the open forums for those who want to read further on) with little (except for details) left to chance.
There's the WHOLE damn Galaxy, with the possibility of playing all alone offline, online but with selected people, online with EVERYONE, and even an Ironman Mode. biggrin

SC has handcrafted planets but appallingly less that E: D.

It's not just the numbers, it's the galaxy simulation that it's impressive.
All the space bodies moves around their correct (or as correctly as known to man) orbit. There's an underlying simulation that handles population, economy, politics and such.

Just my point of view.

I guess it all boils down to "Did you like more Wing Commander/Privateer or Elite/ Elite 2".
biggrin

I'm happy anyway it goes. It's going to be great for all the players, whatever choices they do.

What puts me off SC is that...if I buy a ship with real money I could potentially lose that for ever! I wont pledge though! as I don't want to buy a ship that I might not like or enjoy!

It was a concern that you could lose your pledged ship so they introduced the concept of LTI or Life Time Insurance, which has given them a great headache ever since!

Now if you first pledge, your ship has either 3 months or 6 months insurance to start and there after you pay a little in game currency (UEC or Imp as it has been nicknamed) to insure your ship. They say the cost of insurance will be trivial and that LTI for the first backers won't make much of a difference.
If you know someone with either Original Backer or Veteran Backer status you can ask them to get the ship for you and then gift it to you, that way it would have Life Time Insurance, that option runs out on the 26 Nov 2013 tho, from then on all ships will have the same limited insurance.

The pledging has been to fund the game to get it made and the ships are a reward for giving your hard earned cash to CIG, they have stated that these ships you can get now are just the starting ships and there will be more to purchase/earn in game once it is released. There is a possibility that you can get a copy of the game without a ship and hire on as crew for other players and so fund the in game purchase of a ship, they have repeatedly said that everything you buy with real money is available in game with in game currency, you just have to go out and work for it in-game smile

If you have one of the 3/6/9/12 month insurance ships you can gift your package to an original backers and they can break it down and regift you a LTI ship.

You can also just get the very basic package with the aurora now for 35 bucks. Think of it as a preorder as that price will go up once the game goes into alpha / beta and then release. Every game copy comes with at least the aurora so you might as well get in now and pick up a LTI aurora.

They have a really good deal on a 45 dollar Aurora LN that has twice the guns and one more mod slot than the standard aurora.

I thought it might be interesting to put all of our stuff down in one place so we know how many we have and what the general play style will be.

I have not pledge yet, I will wait until the dog fighting module has been released before I buy into it. But I will aim to be a Bounty Hunter/Smuggler!
