Is this game a money pit? It seems like a modern day FSX, but only in outer space. You purchase the main game with a basic ship, but if you want additional high end ships those have to be purchased separately at a premium price. For example with FSX paying 50+ bucks for a PMDG made 747. Oh and then purchase non-transferable insurance on top of that?

Don't get me wrong though all the videos so far look amazing! I'm not into playing alphas or betas - I like to jump in with the finished product. It just seems like by the time this game is released it will be so in depth + with all the various packages/options to purchase it will be super overwhelming to someone just starting fresh.

I had to laugh just a bit when you said that one. As someone whose literally rebuilding his FSX library after a 2 year break, a failed HDD that had the former library and some various other things, I had began the arduous task of looking up receipts, downlinks from various web stores and haggling with some web store tech support before realizing how large not only the size of the accumulated files, but cost as well......alas over the course of 5 years but still very substantial.

I agree that Star Citizen is something akin to FSX and it's various vendors of wares though. However, one thing really nice is the ability o at least retain full retail credit for my purchases and apply them to other purchases. If only the same could be done with many of the earlier FSX products I bought but will not be downloading again.

I hear ya styrkerpsg. I have put a lot into FSX with add ons to make it look better as well as enhance the realism with different high end air craft. It seems like Star Citizen is going the same route, but at least it's all under one roof.

1. You pay for the main operating system with a campaign and a starter space craft.
2. You pay for any additional insurance for the space craft.
3. You pay for any additional higher end space craft and any insurance for those as well.

One thing that I do like though is that you can purchase all this stuff with in game earned credits.
On the flip side though I have a feeling you will have to virtually live in game playing it day in and day out to earn enough credit to make those purchases.

So for the average guy with a family like me I will have to pay $$$ USD $$$ to keep up with the "jones'" in this game if I want to enjoy the online experience.

The main thing with SC is that ALL the content can be unlocked in game with money earned in game. There seems to be a hue sales frenzy with really expensive ships but really you dont need to buy them. In fact you dont need to buy anything past the 40 dollar base game.

The rest are just for those with more money than brains who are too impatient to not know what is good for them. I dont think this game is going to be a pay2win game either. Hopefully they balance the in game sales better. Once the came goes gold they are also going to STOP selling ships on their website. After that you have to earn the money in game and buy the ships there.

If I were to purchase a package right now what can I do? Can I fly around the universe exploring? I'm sure there isnt any interaction with AI/NPC at this point?

And what exactly is Arena Command? Is it a part of the final release or is it just a "demo" for head to head combat or human vs AI dog fighting?

You can do two things right now. You can walk around your hangar inspecting the ship that you have and you can play arena commander which is the only real gameplay right now. AC is basically a virtual deathmatch/team deathmatch game with the ship you bought right now.

There is not a lot to it but you can fly around with your ship and explore the somewhat small maps. There is no persistent universe play right now (like with Elite).

AC has a few game modes
Deathmatch
Team Death Match
Capture the Flag
Racing'
SP vs AI swarm
Coop vs AI swarm

As far as I know the AC thing is going to be part of the final release for people who just want quick action or want to test drive various ships. But right now it is basically just a demo mode for the full game.

How are the updated joystick controls in the new patch? Better?

Better...not get your hopes up!

They have improved but there are some really frustrating parts to it still. Such as you still can't clear a binding without having to resort to wiping everything or having to use an alternative button.

I have just started using a third party program in order to program my hog stick. Although it took my old brain a while I have now got my head around it and have pretty much set my stick, rudder and trackir how I want it.

Having said that, I am starting to really enjoy the module and look with interest at how it develops. I would also say that although I too initially was worried about the whole pay to play vibe, I think the main positive to take from it all is that those who have the cash to buy all these ships have enabled the game to develop far beyond all initial expectations. For those that can't afford more than the starter ship, you will still be able to enjoy the game, grow and earn in game credits to buy all the ships but still reap the benefits of this early funding.

My joystick setup still does not even register and if I force it with the xml file it has some very frustrating issues (like deciding mid game to just stop working.)

Damn! I thought I'd had some issues, but at least my joystick works!

What stick are you using?

BTW if anyone is interested, this is what I'm using to map my hog. https://github.com/SCToolsfactory/SCJMapper-V2/releases

There really is no point in this at the moment (well for me anyway). I am not interested in arena commander, flying a ship I do not own and I am not going to piss about with XML files.

Until there is content and at least decent mapping and registering of peripherals, then the game(game - there is no game) has and will remained deleted on my hard drive.

But I am still hoping for the future.

I can get my x52 pro to map, but it took a few tries, it kept picking up my CH throttle quad right away.

The annoying thing is you can't clear buttons. How is that not a feature. I want to turn off any sort of mouse aim or steering but I can't yet.

Hmm, I could've sworn when I had to re-install SC last week (it wouldn't patch) that when I selected Warthog in the controls it disabled the mouse flight controls. I'll have to double-check.

I don't believe that to be the case. My Warthog stick and mouse can both control the flight.

Geez... So they're now selling big capital ships for $2500 each long before small multi crew ships are implemented in something as simple as the arena... That's quite a leap of faith. This ship is supposed to have a minimum crew of 24 - what could possibly go wrong implementing that? (meanwhile our favourite combat flight sims often struggle to have this amount of players per side). I have a really hard time trusting the whole thing when they come up with such moves. I really wish they could have stuck to something much closer to their initial goals, which were ambitious enough to be a revolution in gaming. What else are they going to promise next?

Besides these aspects, I wouldn't want to buy this sort of capital ship to have them in my inventory day 1. Hell, if these ships ever work, it's going to be awesome to look at them as a long term objective, something to acquire after playing for a long time and slowly progressing towards them.

Anyway, before I can believe that this sort of stuff will work I'd really like to see a Constellation working in arena commander, and later in the game, for me and my friends to fly, then we'll talk. I remember how the Millenium Falcon in Star Wars Galaxies used to be really hard to use in multiplayer due to any small amount of lag making the turrets hard to operate.
