Any ideas why my system is showing resources available and yet my FSX install is like a slide show around big airports (eg Heathrow) or even above cities (eg London).

My specs are
Windows 7 64bit
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz
8GB RAM
Gigabyte GTX460 768MB

I do have REX and TrafficX running.

I know it's not a super fast system - but as I said, GPU and CPU cores seem to have some punch left...except the first core which made me think it was only running on one core - but all 4 cores are ticked in Affinity.

Also - I am upgrading my system next October but in the interim I was thinking about getting a 2GB GTX660 - do you think that might help?

In game I am using
Graphics
1680x1050 32bit
Global Settings Ultra High
Global Texture Resolution set to Very High
Lens Flare on
Advanced Animations on
Aircraft casts shadow on ground is on
Aircraft casts shadow on itself is on
Aircraft landing lights illuminate ground is on

Terrain and Water
Level of Detail Radius is medium
Mesh Complexity is 30
Mesh Resolution is 76m
Texture resolution is 1m
Water Effects is Low 2.0
Scenery Complex is Dense
Autogen Density is Dense
Ground scenery shadows is on
Special Effects Detail is Medium

Weather
Cloud Draw Distance is 110miles
Detailed Clouds is on
Cloud Coverage Density is Maximum

Traffic
Airline Traffic Density is 100%
General Aviation Traffic Density is 100%
Airport vehicle density is Medium
Road Vehicles is 57%
Ships and Ferries is 18%
Leisure Boats is 19%

Are there any things I could do (apart from dropping all the graphics) to get better FPS?

Looking at my settings I could probably drop some stuff - but what are the best things to turn down that would have the biggest effect of increasing framerate but without dropping graphics quality too much?

And again - do you think a GTX660 would impact it much?

Thanks so much for any help.

I'd start by doing the following mate, and increasing if possible one thing at a time prioritising what's important to you.

Also try limiting frames to 30.

Thx Tigerwulf

That helped somewhat - but now my airports are lifeless again :-(

It's amazing this game has been out so long and it runs like this on my system - which would've probably been considered as high end when the game came out!

I think I'll be getting the GTX660 anyway - I'm sure it'll give me a boost until my upgrade next year.

Thanks again

You may want to try this guide in whole or in part.

Nick is a bit...indelicate...at times but I did his FSX install routine and it seemed to work for me.

Deacon

The problem with FSX is that it is old code and thus doesn't really take advantage of everything that a modern computer offers. There are others that people still play that really eat up resources, but they are product of their times. smile

Yep your traffic is too high. I'd go with what TW said except ships/boats at 8%

Thank you.

Does anyone think a new 2GB GTX660 would make an impact?

A different guide by Nick N

http://www.simforums.com/forums/the-fsx-computer-system-the-bible-by-nickn_topic46211.html

About a quarter of te way down, he addresses pairing your video card and processor so that one does not get bottlenecked by the other. It might answer your question a bit.

In and of itself, no. If you're getting stutters looking at clouds while running lot's of AA, then maybe, but otherwise no. As shown in your screen cap above, your current card isn't being maxed out.

The Q series CPU's are still fine for general gaming when paired with a powerful GPU, but FSX isn't 'normal' gaming unfortunately.

If you want more FPS, you'll need a newer unlocked CPU, a top-shelf cooling solution, a mid-to high-end motherboard, and the patience to play the overclocking game. I still see drops below 30 FPS in advanced payware birds around highend payware airports, even with my rig.

Also keep in mind, you aren't playing FSX as it was when it launched. You're stuffing it full of high end airports, textures, traffic, planes, etc. A modern FSX 'stack' is a far cry from FSX as seen on launch day about 7 years ago. Take out all the 'stuff' and I'll bet she runs pretty well on your rig!

Besides your traffic (all) density being too high (I agree with everyone above), your processor speed is too low. FSX is more sensitive to CPU speed than anything else (including the number of cores). GHz is king. A new graphics card will increase the quality of your graphics but won't have as big an impact on your FPS (so don't expect miracles). I run FSX at 3.5 GHz (overclocked) and have my densities set to the following:

Airline traffic density: 16%
General aviation traffic density: 16%
Airport vehicle density: 0%
Road vehicles: 15%
Ships and ferries: 0%
Leisure boats: 8%

As recommended by ORBX (makers of top-shelf FSX scenery). I find those settings optimal for where I do most of my flying: bush country.

I also use this little puppy, MulticoreEnvironmentAdvanced (or similar program), to segregate my addons (giving them one core) from FSX (giving it all four cores) during play. If you want to go even further in terms of auto-tweaking, you might want to try FSXBoosterv4 I got good results with it, until I developed the knowledge and confidence to do a lot of my own tweaking.

Biggest bang for your hardware buck when it comes to FSX: CPU speed and an optimized HDD, or, even better, an SSD.

War is the continuation of natural selection by other means.

2.33 GHz is too little and FSX loves MHz. Instead of picking up a new video card, pick up a new CPU. Or overclock and get a SSD.
