Not a bad job indeed! Doesn't the Charger lose 5 hubcaps in the full version of the movie? I think Car and Driver or someone recreated the chase when the Bullitt Mustang was put out 10 years ago too, but without an appropriate Charger. Both of those Mustangs sound amazing! The jumps always look brutal in those heavy 60's cars with that wallowing suspension.

No power steering, engines that probably didn't pull enough vacuum to run power brakes, bias-ply tires, 4-wheel drum brakes (maybe not on the 'stang), and heavy big-block engines (the Mustang's 390 weighed in at 650lb in stock configuration, the 440 in the Charger was 670) that aren't noted for their quick revving...there probably have been or will be more technically demanding car chases since "Bullitt," (Ronin, for one) but none are as GOOD as "Bullitt." Along with the chariot race in "Ben-Hur," this scene will never be topped. From Wikipedia: In a magazine article many years later, one of drivers involved in the chase sequence remarked that the stock Dodge 440s were so much faster than the Mustang that the drivers had to keep backing off the accelerator to prevent the Dodge from easily pulling away from the Mustang. 50 horses and 50 cubes can do that!

As I recall, the San Francisco hill/streets chase scene in the original Bullitt was essentially shot in one take using multiple cameras, and the editor was able to creatively combine several angles to lengthen the sequence and make the cars seem to cover a much greater distance. That's why you see hubcaps flying off every few seconds. Speaking of classics and remakes, I just watched the original "Gone In 60 Seconds" (1974). It's kind of corny but in a good way, so look for it on YouTube if you have an hour or so to kill. Mustang Monthly recently published an interesting write up about the making of the movie. It's amazing what was accomplished on a shoe-string budget.

You could get both power steering and brakes on Mustangs of that era ( my buddy had one and I had a 67 Cougar ) but with power steering the "straight" position was anywhere between 10 & 2 on the clock . His Mustang had disc brakes on front my Cougar had drums all around......it was a real B!TCH to stop if you drove through the tiniest bit of water My '66 had all drums. I went through a HUGE "puddle" at the mall once and drove about 15 minutes before I had any brakes. Just in time to be able to stop at home. LOL Couldn't just coast to a stop or anything to just wait, it was a challenge. (dumbass teenager moment in other words)

You could get both power steering and brakes on Mustangs of that era A lot of people with built muscle car engines got rid of the power steering to eliminate the parasitic power loss from the pump. Really aggressive cams that keep the valves open for long durations to make a lot of top-end power also drastically reduced available vacuum at lower RPMs, either requiring a vacuum reservoir or non-boosted brakes. The way McQueen was using both hands to steer and appeared to be putting a lot of effort into it makes me think he didn't have power steering.

I can remember my father's Vauxhall Velox 3.3l, it had power assisted drum brakes and he bought it second hand in 1966 to go on a European tour, he kept it for a few years after that and I got to drive it on a few occasions back then too. The brakes were good Got a Mustang mod motor in my MG ZT, 4.6l V8, and yes tramping the loud pedal gives single digit mpg, I could get it down to about 7mpg, and now that it is supercharged, it goes down to just under 3mpg. Or I can take it easy and get 30+mpg Edit: got mixed up with a truck I had with a Chrysler 4.2l V8, the MG has a 4.6l Mod Motor

I had an 1983/84 Mustang Giha with the straight 6 200cu in engine, it had power everything, all driven off the vacuum, it was a pain when the engine was cold as pressing the brake would dump the vacuum and stall the engine - no engine = no power steering and with 1 turn lock to lock it was mighty heavy! I used to plan my runs to minimise the amount of braking and turning when it was cold. With the power steering there was no weight on the steering wheel, it was as easy to keep it pointing straight as it was to put it on full lock, it took a little getting used to at first.

All true mate. Old muscle cars are great to look at and remenise about ....but those of us who "were there" remember what proper bastages they were to actually own and drive. Another of the guys had a 'fake' GTO ( a modded Lemans ) that bugger was fast but would not idle worth a damn below 1000 rpm Tramp the "loud peddle" and watch the fuel guage drop I had a 1970 Lemans souped up and cloned into a GTO, it fine at idled at 450-500 rpm but yes you could actually watch the gas gauge drop, none too slowly at that, under full throttle. It was a stressful nightmare to drive in the rain or in traffic with modern vehicles, I think I developed an ulcer because of it. I loved the combination of massive, massive instant torque {could do a burnout starting from freeway speed!} and surprisingly quick revving speed, but the rest of the package made me wish for something more modern.

A friend, father of my brother's girl friend, had a Mustang Mach1 fastback and I had a little 1600cc Fiat 124 Special T and the little Fiat could run rings round the Mach1, in a straight up drag race I could leave the Mach1 standing and smoking while I would be half way to the horizon by the time the Mach1 got off the line. Oh that was sweet that day, he would not believe it was "only" a 1600 Mind you the little fiat could beat a lot of bigger cars just a shame it looks like a Lada The Fiat had DOHC 1600cc with two twin choke downdraft webbers and a close ratio 5 speed gearbox with limited slip rear axle, for a mid 1970s car it was quite special indeed.

Another of the guys had a 'fake' GTO ( a modded Lemans ) that bugger was fast but would not idle worth a damn below 1000 rpm Tramp the "loud peddle" and watch the fuel guage drop Yeah, at a minimum you could count on having to set valve lash once a week, and gasket technology wasn't quite where it is now so if you had an aluminum intake manifold (who didn't?) you'd be retorquing the bolts or replacing the gaskets regularly due to vacuum or coolant leaks. I remember learning to run an unlit propane torch over all the sealing surfaces with the engine running to check for vacuum leaks. I was always a 4x4 guy so I never really did much in the way of performance for mine - other than headers and the 4-barrel manifold from an IH 345 or 392 V8, there wasn't much you could do for the IH 304 V8 in my Scout (the 500cfm Holley carb did quite a bit, like give me 12mpg max LOL) - but I learned most of what I know from working on friends' muscle cars. And muscle trucks - a '74 F100 w/390, automatic, and 4.56 limited slip rear was as much a muscle car as that Mustang, and had a hell of a lot more room to work under the hood LOL.

I had a '78 Firebird with a GTO 455 swapped in. It didn't get mileage, it got yardage. LOL I miss cheap gas!
