Weird Al did a great parody of one of their songs.
“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”
Always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Elie Wiesel. Romanian born Jewish writer, professor, political activist, Nobel Laureate, Holocaust survivor. 1928 - 2016.
Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one - the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts. C.S. Lewis, 1898 - 1963.
I'm surprised at their international appeal; I always thought them somewhat English-centric. Saw them back in the day with the 'Pretty Things' tour. Ended up in a massive punch-up I recall. Standard ending for North London back in '65. I ran away as I didn't want to get blood on my Tonic Dormiel mohair suit. Fell off my scooter and ruined it anyway
The Who were worse; Daltrey would lay into anyone that he thought glanced at him funny back in those early Mod days *sigh, memories*

Not to derail the thread. (egads.. it's my own) But I happened upon the movie Quadrophenia a few weeks ago on one of the alternative channels. I am a big fan of the band and the album.. but not so much the movie as I found out. I had to turn it off within a 1/2 hour..
In any case your experience reminds me of that lifestyle described so eloquently in that album and the image the Who projected back in the sixties. The Mods and Rockers etc.
And here we have The Jam with their rendition of David Watts:
