I've noticed some funny goofs on tv shows while watching them on Bluray and in widescreen. It's interesting how sometimes problems arise when you watch something in widescreen and high def that was originally in full screen format.

1. In the pilot episode of "Firefly" you can clearly see that Wash doesn't have his hands on the control stick but he's moving moving his hands as if he's piloting the ship.

2. In the Star Trek: TOS episode "Cat's Paw" you can clearly see the puppet strings for the two alien creatures near the end of the episode.

Have you guys noticed any?

I remember seeing the bridge scene at the end of the Moria Mines part in LOTR in HD for the first time and thinking how awful some of the CGI was, especially the flames. I often get the same feeling re-watching the Star Wars prelogy. Lower quality somehow helped CGI blend in with live footage, and HD sometimes makes it look like in-production unrefined previews.

Cheers

I was watching The Jerk with Steve Martin:

in the gas station scene where he was dealing with the 3 Mexicans using a stolen credit card to buy gas and get free tires, you can see one of the film crew hiding at the side of the gas station building.

He would appear into camera range every now and then and one time, you could see him on the other side of the glass window.

In top gun,

several scenes were horizontally flipped, making writing backwards / mirrored.
several scenes, actors had the nametags on their uniforms upside down.
one scene you can see the crane they dropped the damaged MIG-28 from.

The only thing I noticed is that the make up & skin quality of the various actors & actresses just ain't cutting it, in HiDef.

I noticed in "2001: A Space Odyssey" that you can clearly see panel creases of the set backdrop that the sky was painted onto in many of the ape scenes.

I don't think I was specific enough but I was thinking about goofs that were revealed or created by widescreen and high def and which were previously hidden by the original fullscreen format and standard definition. This is different from goofs that were made that would show up irrespective of format.

There must be few TV shows which were created in widescreen and high-def but before those formats were widely broadcast. Firefly for example was 2002, and I'm sure that was broadcast in widescreen when it was first aired in the UK.

Obviously doesn't apply at all to cinema, which is generally wider than widescreen and higher definition than high-def.

OK, I think mine was a half match. I don't think the lines in 2001 were visible when projected in the theater, but only became visible due to the high resolution of an HD TV screen and not having it projected and blown up, which I think blurred them. The fullscreen/widescreen change wasn't a factor, though.

Firefly was originally broadcast in fullscreen on Fox. For whatever reason at the time, Fox did not like their tv shows to be shown in widescreen.

They didn't like black bars.

ST:TNG was filmed in widescreen on set, just like Babylon 5, but unlike B5 they didn't really try to keep set/crew out of that part of the shot. So with the BD rereleases they're still in 4:3 or else it would cost a fortune to erase all that junk with CG.

B5 only has a couple of problems with set or crew intruding on a scene. Of course, the fact that all the effects were rendered 4:3 means any live action shot using CG loses a lot of resolution as it's a 4:3 image cropped to 16:9 as opposed to the native res for the shots with just people talking for example.

Many "goofs" date from the days when people were expected to see a film once or twice in a theater (where quality could vary depending on where you saw it) and then maybe years later on a 20" TV in their home with commercials. It often wouldn't be worth reshooting a scene for such a "boom in frame" shot if it was fleeting. Also, there might have been a take that didn't have the goof, but it was inferior for some other reason like focus or performance or tripped over line or something.

Likewise the effects didn't need to be rigorous because you didn't see it long or clear. HD and home video changed that.

You can clearly see the wires on all of the aliens' spacecrafts in the original "War of the Worlds".

On the Bridge at the border when Ness and Malone were shooting at the oncoming car, there was a person wearing a gray coat running away behind them.

Who was that?

A film crew?

Poor editing?

I want to say it's one of the two bad guys they chased down afterward but it's not:

Malone chased down the ledger carrying bad guy

and Ness chased down the other bad guy who took refuge in the cabin.

Both of those people were wearing light colored coats.
