It's not linked on the orbx site yet, but is available at the flight sim store. Weighs in at a hefty 4.18 GB!

Personally, I'm tapped out at the moment curtousy of the steam summer sale and preordering Milans custom pedals (see the pit builders section).

If anyone would be kind enough to throw up shots of Philadelphia with FTX global, that would be awesome. Bonus points for including sun sky sims awesome (and free!) KPHL. smile

I used one of the recommended download managers and it only took 35 minutes. Why the hell would you waste 6 hours downloading?

Why the hell do you assume he is chosing to wait 6hrs? Some people are just limited on download speed.

Back on topic - FTX Global looks great. The only issue I've seen is green textures showing up in desert areas, but lots of people have reported it so hopefully it will get a fix.

WTF? I never said anything that the download will take up to 6h...

Real life issues made these 6h to a little bit more biggrin but anyway here are some very quick shots. More will follow after I solved some FSUIPC issues.

It doesn't look very good in this area, IMHO. Maybe it also installed not correctly as I did have a small error message after choosing FTX Global Hybrid mode (something with landclass data file in NZ)

But as I said, I will do some more testing today and will show some more pics.

Pics don't look as good as dedicated regions. I'm not just talking about buildings. I mean the ground and trees. They look fake, painted on, like some of those photo scenery packages which only look good from high altitude looking down. Previous ORBX packages (AUS4, PNW, etc.)look terrific even at low levels which is my preferred flying. Did I just waste a hundred bucks?

Well, first of all, of course it doesn't look as good as a dedicated region. Dedicated regions have manually created landclass telling the sim where to place all the textures. And photoreal mixed in. Plus lots of other stuff. That's why the dedicated regions run $40; there's a lot more effort that goes into each one. If you though FTX Global was going to make the whole world look like PNW or AUS4, you should have done more research. It was made very clear all over the ORBX forums exactly what FTX Global does and that it was simply a new texture package. How those textures are placed is still up to default FSX landclass or whatever other landclass addon you might have.

Second, I have no idea what you're talking about regarding things looking "painted on". Your description makes no sense to me.

So far, I'm happy with my $100 purchase (except for the green deserts).

I`m quite pleased with it so far. That said, I have UTX installed, which provides better LC.

And I like the trees and hedges very much better than default FSX.

It does look painted on in some areas, just look at the foliage near the shore on the above screenshots - no relief whatsoever... totally flat trees... it make look nice from high up, but it doesn't cut it for low level flying, just as any photo-realistic texture package by the way....

I hope you're not a DX10 flyer like many. FTX Global has a bug that causes it to not display daytime and nightime street lights correctly. Instead you get black squares all over the landscape, frankly making it totally unenjoyable. ORBX is aware of it, tried to fix it, but couldn't. The hope is a programmer named Steve Parsons, a genius with DX10 and FSX, will release a fix some time soon. The ORBX guys were shocked to learn that so many of us only fly with DX10 preview checked instead of DX9. We do it because of significantly better framerates and better graphics, especially water graphics.

Fingers crossed.

I wonder how many times you have to download it to get a complete part 8?

apparently, 3 times from 3 different servers is not enough

I think it looks pretty good for this area actually. I imagine it will improve greatly when they release their landclass product.

No,

it`s only textures. The LC products will be sold later for different regions separetly and improve the look of FTX Global. They have added a demo of it around Riga IIRC.

Cloud9's XClass might be an interim solution. Or Ultimate Terrain.

FTX seems to have nice blending between ground textures and autogen.

This.

I'm gonna pass on any LC products until the Orbx ones come out. My fear is installing a LC product, then uninstalling that LC product, the installing Orbx's LC product could easily break something in FSX. I'd rather just wait and deal with fewer headaches.

I've read about people running XClass or UTX in conjunction with FTX Global without any hitches.

It didn't appear to install correctly for me. I get an hour glass cursor at the end of the install process that won't quit. The textures look the same to me. It didn't have this problem in P3D. There is a significant difference in P3D, but not in FSX. Anyone else having install issues?
