Is it the "new normal" to have new registrations to forums require admin approval? I have a buddy who joined up, and he encountered this, I don't recall having this before.

Yes, it has been that way for while. The reason is, we were getting some spammers (and worse) when it was auto register. Now each registration goes through multiple checks before it is cleared.

It's a great way to ward off potential members in my opinion, typically when I see "your application requires admin approval" I close the page and go elsewhere. Didn't work here though, did it?

Well if it wasn't that way we would wake up every morning to disgusting images, potential misleading links where one can be infected, and false post for stuff for sale. Which would you rather have??

Agreed, on another forum where I'm admin--nowhere near the size of this place--we get hit by registrations daily and had to do the same thing. Asthetucer has registered for approval.....Ythgcher has registered for approval...crap like that. It's CONSTANT. I can't imagine how many SHQ must get hit with to weed out the real applicants. It would be good to maybe have a forum where members could go in and say "________ is someone I referred, they applied today". Give the screen name and email address so they don't get lost in the mix.

Cheers!

I know I'm a bit partial, but "closed" hardly describes a community where access is a simple request away: no background checks, referral letters, secret handshakes, family relationship, etc. And you can't beat the annual membership fee! Also, although referrals shouldn't be necessary, if someone you know isn't hearing back on their registration request, a PM from a registered user in good-standing to a admin or moderator with the new user's username will go a long way towards breaking free any possible logjam that may have occurred in the process.
