Hi

This is really a question for the devs. So this sim is being developped in Russia, with Russian audiences at the main target. If I'm not mistaken, Russian law forbids representation of Nazi insignas (the hackenkreuz especially) and so we won't be seeing them in the default game, just like we didn't in Il-2 back in the days. Is that correct ?

Not that I particularly enjoy the sight of Nazi insignas, but I can be a bit of a "Nazi" (see what I did there ? biggrin ) when it comes to historically accurate markings. Il-2/FB allowed for 3rd party mods to enable the hackenkreuz, as well as the historical Finnish roundels (which had nothing to do with the Nazi symbol, but was associated with it due to Finland's Axis allegiances during the conflict ) for people who wanted them accurately represented.

Though the "issue" is fairly minor for LW planes, I trust the team has plans for expansion in the coming years, maybe even including a Leningrad/Finland expansion (one can always dream biggrin ) where the question of accurate Finnish markings will no doubt be brought up.
Has this been given any thought in the development process ? Does digital distribution allow for "zoning" for copies distributed in countries that do not ban the hackenkreuz ?
Will aircraft markings be dynamic ala Il-2 or will they be part of the paint schemes ? Depending on the system chosen, will there be an option for 1/Stencil replacers (MAT Manager style) 2/Replacement skinpacks ?

It's probably too early to have a definite answer at this stage, but I just thought this problematic needed to be brought up.

Cheers

Nico

Il-2 series produced Finnish aircraft with the appropriate markings. The Finnish symbol is also not canted 45 degrees as the Nazi party's symbol is.

I'll presume that mods off will be the avenue for those missing the Nazi symbol on the Luftwaffe skins.

Personally I never see them. I play in cockpit so I can't see them in the LW birds and I don't notice the markings when I'm shooting at them.

Did it ? I remember always seeing the modern ones (roundels) until installing some mods that changed the MATs to the correct ones. The angle might have been different, that detail is too minute for Joe Public not to confuse it with the Nazi symbol, especially since Finland fought on the Axis side, hence why it might not appear even in a title aimed at an audience of connoisseurs.

As you said, their not being there won't have such a significant visual impact on LW planes, but if a Finnish theatre is to be added somewhere down the line, it would be nice to know or start thinking about how to implement it accurately.

Cheers

Nico

The symbol on the Finnish airplanes was the personal insignia of a Swedish count (if memory serves) who made a significant financial contribution to the Finnish air force. It is not related to the Nazi party or axis allegiance.

Pretty sure I've seen these markings on the Finish planes without any mods.

Back on topic, I too would like to see historical markings on Luftwaffe planes if only for historical accuracy.

The markings for Finland in IL2 were originally the post-war sanitized version. It was only later that the Finnish swastika marking was enabled via mods.
